Read the complete plot breakdown of Siruthai (2011), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

Bhavuji, a ruthless rowdy, receives a chilling update: Rathnavel Pandian IPS is alive, contrary to the belief that he was killed by Bhavuji’s younger brother, Bhadra. Fueled by vengeance, Bhavuji and his men rush to Rathnavel’s grave to exhume the body, only to discover a coffin packed with heavy rocks — a grim omen that Rathnavel has survived and that the hunt is far from over.

Meanwhile, Rocket Raja and his partner, Kaatu Poochi, drift through a life of petty crimes, stealing expensive items and conniving to fleece those they approach. At a lavish wedding, Raja encounters Swetha, and an immediate spark grows between them; Swetha returns his affection, and a tentative romance begins to bloom.

During a separate caper, a woman arrives with a large wooden box at a railway station, insisting the box is filled with gold and jewels. The duo decide to guard the box for a share of the loot, but their curiosity leads them to an unexpected discovery: a little girl inside the box who regards Raja as her father, leaving him both stunned and unsettled.

A few days later, Kaatu Poochi finds a photograph linking the little girl to her real father, Rathnavel Pandian, who bears a striking resemblance to Raja. The revelation deepens Raja’s confusion as Bhavuji’s henchmen close in on Rathnavel’s whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Bhavuji’s forces intensify their search for Rathnavel Pandian. In Devipur, Rathnavel Pandian is assigned to the town and arrives with his daughter Divya. He confronts a corrupt system headed by a ruthless MLA Bhavuji, whose hold over politics and crime runs deep. When Munna, Bhavuji’s son, kidnaps and molests a police officer’s wife, Rathnavel acts to stop him, not fully aware of Bhavuji’s extensive influence.

The Home Minister and the DGP, under political pressure, compel Rathnavel to release Munna. Rathnavel’s resolve remains, but the powers that be override him; at a celebratory event for Munna’s release, Rathnavel uses a trap to cause Munna’s death by hanging, a move that enrages Bhavuji. Furious, Bhavuji’s brother Bhadra disguises himself as an idol during Holi to strike Rathnavel, stabbing him and then shooting him. Believed dead, Rathnavel survives but suffers a brain injury, and the villagers shield him, ferrying him to Chennai for treatment. To shield Divya from the truth, the police place her in the care of Raja, who bears Rathnavel’s appearance.

In the present, Rathnavel Pandian succumbs to his injuries. Raja steps into his stead, returning to Devipur to avenge the fallen officer. Bhavuji is stunned to see Rathnavel alive again, while Raja dismantles Bhavuji’s grip on the town. Swetha tracks Raja but chooses to stay in disguise to protect his cover, though she attempts to reveal his identity by exposing his weakness, a moment that tests his resolve. The climactic confrontation pits Raja against Bhavuji and Bhadra, and in a hard-fought final battle, Raja prevails, bringing an end to their reign of terror.

This movie summary FAQ helps explain confusing scenes, plot twists, and narrative decisions in clear, searchable detail.

Q1

Why did Bhavuji want Rathnavel Pandian killed?

A.

Bhavuji, a ruthless MLA and crime boss, wanted Rathnavel Pandian dead because the honest IPS officer was actively fighting his corruption. Rathnavel had been assigned to Devipur to confront the criminal network run by Bhavuji, who controlled both politics and crime in the town. When Rathnavel intervened to stop Munna (Bhavuji's son) from kidnapping and assaulting a police officer's wife, and later caused Munna's death during his release celebration, Bhavuji ordered his brother Bhadra to eliminate Rathnavel.

Early in the film, Bhavuji receives news that Rathnavel is alive and rushes to exhume his grave, showing the depth of his obsession with ensuring Rathnavel's death.

Q2

Why was Divya placed with Rocket Raja?

A.

After Rathnavel was attacked and presumed dead, the police needed to protect his young daughter Divya from Bhavuji's retaliation. Since Rocket Raja bore an identical resemblance to Rathnavel, the police placed Divya in his care to maintain the illusion that her father was still alive and to shield her from the truth about Rathnavel's fate. This also allowed Raja to eventually assume Rathnavel's identity to continue his fight against Bhavuji.

Earlier, a woman arrives at a railway station with a wooden box containing the little girl who calls Raja 'father', establishing the connection between Raja and Divya before the official placement.

Q3

How did Rathnavel survive the Holi attack?

A.

During Holi celebrations, Bhavuji's brother Bhadra disguised himself as an idol to approach Rathnavel undetected. He stabbed Rathnavel and then shot him, leading everyone to believe he was dead. However, Rathnavel survived but sustained a serious brain injury. The villagers, who supported him against Bhavuji's tyranny, shielded him from further harm and secretly transported him to Chennai for medical treatment.

The timeline shows Bhadra specifically choosing the Holi festival for the attack, using the disguise as an idol to get close to Rathnavel.

Q4

Why did Rocket Raja take on Rathnavel's identity?

A.

After Rathnavel Pandian succumbed to his brain injuries, Rocket Raja decided to assume his identity to continue fighting Bhavuji and bring justice to Devipur. The police and villagers supported this plan because Raja physically looked exactly like Rathnavel, and Bhavuji already feared Rathnavel's return. Raja used this opportunity to dismantle Bhavuji's criminal empire and avenge the honest officer's death.

The discovery of the photograph linking Raja to Rathnavel's appearance foreshadows the identity switch, and the townspeople's protection of Rathnavel establishes their willingness to support anyone standing against Bhavuji.

Q5

Why did Swetha stay in disguise around Raja?

A.

Swetha, who had romantic feelings for Rocket Raja, discovered his true identity but chose to remain in disguise to protect his cover as Rathnavel. She understood that revealing his real identity could compromise his mission to bring down Bhavuji. However, she tested his resolve by attempting to expose his weakness, creating tension in their relationship as they navigated trust and deception.

At the lavish wedding, Raja meets Swetha and they develop a romance, establishing their connection before the dangerous deception begins.

Q6

What was the significance of the coffin filled with rocks?

A.

When Bhavuji and his men exhumed Rathnavel's grave expecting to find his body, they discovered a coffin packed with heavy rocks instead. This was the clue that Rathnavel had actually survived the attack and was still alive. The rocks symbolized the villagers' secret effort to fake the death and protect the injured officer, which terrified Bhavuji because it meant the man he thought he killed was still alive and hunting him.

The opening scene establishes Bhavuji's fear of Rathnavel and sets the tone for the entire chase narrative.

Q7

How did Munna die at the celebration?

A.

Munna, Bhavuji's son who had kidnapped and assaulted a police officer's wife, was released due to political pressure from the Home Minister and DGP. At the celebratory event marking Munna's release, Rathnavel set a trap that caused Munna to die by hanging. This act of justice, though unofficial, enraged Bhavuji and directly triggered the chain of events leading to Rathnavel's assassination attempt by Bhadra.

The earlier intervention where Rathnavel stopped Munna's crime establishes his willingness to confront Bhavuji's family directly.

Q8

How was Rocket Raja able to defeat Bhavuji and Bhadra?

A.

Rocket Raja, despite being a petty thief with no police training, was able to defeat Bhavuji and Bhadra through his resourcefulness, street smarts, and determination to avenge Rathnavel. He used the element of surprise by appearing as Rathnavel, which initially shocked and destabilized Bhavuji's operations. In the climactic battle, Raja's will to protect Devipur and deliver justice gave him the strength to overcome both antagonists.

Raja's background as a thief who connived and survived through cleverness demonstrates his adaptability, which he channels into combat skills during the finale.

Q9

How are Rocket Raja and Rathnavel Pandian connected?

A.

Rocket Raja and Rathnavel Pandian are doppelgängers, two unrelated men who happen to look exactly alike. Raja is a small-time thief who steals and cons people, while Rathnavel is an honest IPS officer assigned to fight corruption in Devipur. Their identical appearance becomes crucial when Rathnavel dies, allowing Raja to assume his identity and continue his mission against Bhavuji.

The discovery of the photograph linking the little girl to Rathnavel confirms the resemblance, and Bhavuji's shock at seeing 'Rathnavel' alive again demonstrates how convincing the doppelgänger connection is.

Q10

Why did Bhadra disguise himself as an idol during Holi?

A.

Bhadra disguised himself as an idol during the Holi festival to get close to Rathnavel without raising suspicion. The Holi celebrations provided perfect cover, an idol procession would draw crowds and allow Bhadra to approach Rathnavel undetected. This elaborate disguise was part of Bhavuji's plan to eliminate the IPS officer whom he feared would destroy his criminal empire.

The earlier scene where Rathnavel causes Munna's death at a celebration shows that public events are recurring targets for Bhavuji's violence.
