The narrative unfolds across the Western and Eastern Roman Empires, primarily set in Rome and Constantinople. These imperial capitals serve as the political centers where emperors, generals, and the Christian church shape the fate of an empire under threat from barbarian invasions.

The story is set in the 5th century during the final years of the Roman Empire. This period is characterized by the weakening Western Roman Empire while the Eastern Empire maintains relative stability in Constantinople, as Attila the Hun threatens the borders.

The film explores three interconnected themes: Power Struggle, as emperors and military leaders vie for control against external threats; Religion and Destiny, where Christian faith and prophetic signs influence critical decisions from the Pope to political rulers; and Conquest and Downfall, chronicling Attila's rise and eventual fall through battles and betrayals.

Attila is depicted as the formidable Hun warlord who commands fierce loyalty from his warriors. He pursues Roman weapons and wealth, forging uneasy alliances while projecting ruthless strength. Princess Pulcheria is the sister of Emperor Theodosius and a powerful political figure who loves Rome deeply. She uses her influence to protect the empire from internal mutiny and external threats. Her political acumen allows her to name Marcian as her guard and ally, guiding strategic decisions from within the palace to steer the empire toward defensive resurgence.

Marcian is a Roman soldier who begins the story carrying an emperor's message to Constantinople. He rises to become Pulcheria's trusted general after proving his loyalty and courage. He navigates court intrigue, earns military allies, and ultimately orchestrates resistance against both Theodosius's schemes and the Hun threat, shaping the empire's defensive destiny.

Pope Leo I serves as the spiritual authority who intercedes to name Rome the temple of God and foresees Attila's downfall. His confrontation with the barbarian leader becomes pivotal in halting the assault on Rome. He embodies the moral counterweight to imperial politics, using religious authority to influence the empire's fate.

Christian faith and prophetic signs permeate critical choices throughout the film, from the Pope's intervention to monks and visions guiding fate. Theodosius is the Eastern Roman Emperor who seeks to join forces with the Huns against Valentinian III in the West.
