A breaking news report sets the scene in a Los Angeles suburb, where a brutal killer who has already taken more than thirty lives is still at large. Horace Pinker — a television repairman by trade — is identified as the menace, and the investigation heats up as the violence draws closer to Lt. Don Parker’s (the detective leading the case). When Parker closes in, Pinker strikes at the people closest to him, killing Parker’s wife, his foster daughter, and his foster son in a brutal, calculated act.
Parker’s remaining foster son, a college football standout named Jonathan, begins to experience a strange and intimate connection to Pinker through a series of unsettling dreams. These visions become enough to guide Parker toward Pinker’s workshop, pulling the investigation deeper into the killer’s labyrinth. A tense shootout erupts, leaving several officers dead and Pinker on the run. In a cold moment of retaliation, he targets Jonathan’s girlfriend Alison, killing her during a practice as a macabre “birthday present.”
Another dream pushes Parker and the police to confront Pinker, who is found in the midst of another murder attempt and is quickly captured. He is convicted and sentenced to die in the electric chair. But before the sentence is carried out, Pinker drops a chilling revelation: Jonathan is his son, and long ago, a boyish Jonathan had shot him in the knee while trying to stop Pinker from killing his mother. Pinker hints at a Faustian bargain with the devil, and when the electric chair zaps him, he does not die — he becomes pure electricity, a force that can inhabit others to continue his murderous spree.
The nightmare spills into the real world as Pinker possesses Lt. Parker, who uses his own strength to resist the invasion while Pinker slips away into a television dish. Jonathan’s circle of friends, including Rhino, races to the power station to cut the electricity grid and thwart Pinker’s reach. With Alison’s “spirit” guiding him, Jonathan devises a daring scheme to pull Pinker back into the real world and then discovers a crucial flaw: energy, even demonic energy, remains bound by the laws of reality. By exploiting this limitation, Jonathan defeats Pinker and traps him inside a television, a trap completed as the neighborhood plunges into darkness from a blown power main.
As the final overhead lights dim and the quiet of the night settles in, Jonathan steps outside and notices the sky above his street. He shares a quiet moment with the memory of Alison, agreeing that the stars are beautiful, a fitting reminder that life—light and all—persists even after the shadow of fear has been banished.
