Gwok-man was filled with patriotic zeal when the Second Sino-Japanese War began. Inspired by a sense of duty to his country, he chose to enlist in the military rather than remain in Shanghai, leaving behind his life as a clown at the nightclub.

His patriotic decision sets in motion the chain of events that will separate him from Aak-syu.

They met during a Japanese air raid on Shanghai while taking shelter under Suzhou Bridge. In the darkness and chaos of the bombing, they found solace in each other and shared a brief, intimate encounter despite being unable to see each other's faces.

Their meeting under the bridge establishes the central romantic promise that drives the entire story.

During their intimate moment under the bridge, they fell in love and made a pact to meet at the same spot once the conflict ended. This promise represented their hope for a future together beyond the turmoil of war.

This promise becomes the emotional anchor that brings them back together a decade later.

Ten years later, Aak-syu had become a dance hostess at the Bat-je-sing nightclub in Shanghai. Her life had changed drastically as she struggled to survive in the post-war city, working in the entertainment industry rather than returning to her previous life.

Her new occupation at the nightclub is what eventually brings her back into contact with Gwok-man.

After returning to Shanghai following the war, Gwok-man pursued a career in music as a way to rebuild his life. He became a songwriter and played the tuba, eventually writing "Shanghai Blues," which became a beloved hit performed by the famous singer Zau Siu-sin.

The success of his song creates opportunities that eventually lead to his reunion with Aak-syu.

Dang-zai mistakenly entered a beauty contest called "Calendar Queen" thinking it was a teaching job interview. The elderly sponsor chose Dang-zai specifically because of her plain appearance, hoping to prevent her husband from being attracted to a more beautiful winner.

This mistaken identity creates comedic complications that eventually help reunite Gwok-man and Aak-syu.

Gwok-man composed "Shanghai Blues," but it was the renowned singer Zau Siu-sin who performed it. Her performance captured the heart of the city, turning the song into a beloved hit that reflected the emotional mood of post-war Shanghai.

The song's popularity brings Gwok-man recognition and draws him back into the social scene where he encounters Aak-syu.

During the chaos at the Calendar Queen party, Gwok-man and Aak-syu were finally able to recognize each other. The mistaken identity and confusion at the party created the opportunity for them to see each other's faces clearly after years of separation.

This recognition fulfills the promise they made under Suzhou Bridge a decade earlier.

Aak-syu realized that Dang-zai also had feelings for Gwok-man. Knowing she was involved in a love triangle and wanting to avoid further complications, she chose to leave Shanghai by train, sacrificing her own happiness for the sake of others.

Her departure sets up the climactic race to the train station where Gwok-man tries to stop her.

After Gwok-man raced to stop Aak-syu from leaving, Dang-zai was heartbroken but soon encountered another woman who bore a striking resemblance to her. This encounter hints at a potential new beginning for Dang-zai despite her unrequited feelings for Gwok-man.

The lookalike suggests that Dang-zai will find her own happiness separate from Gwok-man.

Aak-syu encountered the scatterbrained Dang-zai who had just been robbed of her money. Feeling compassion for the helpless newcomer to Shanghai, Aak-syu offered Dang-zai a place to stay, not realizing that their upstairs neighbor would turn out to be Gwok-man.

This act of kindness sets in motion the entire chain of events that reunites Aak-syu with Gwok-man.

When Aak-syu's young maid was harassed by a stranger, Aak-syu intervened and was beaten for her bravery. In the chaos, she was unexpectedly pushed onto the stage to perform, where she caught the eye of a wealthy businessman who later proposed marriage, which she defiantly rejected.

This incident further establishes Aak-syu's character and brings additional complications to her story.
