A new vicar in Bellington, Howard Phillips, tries to reach the town’s youth. Hester Peters, vicar’s daughter, hopes to marry him, but he declines. After Phillips confronts a hard‑headed boy, the youth frames him. Hester backs the boy, the community turns against Phillips. Isolated and questioning his faith, he must decide to defend his reputation.
