Throughout the film, Jenny’s interactions with her dolls—which resemble characters from her father’s comics—serve as a conduit for this spirit. While Jenny initially believes the entity is her mother, the truth emerges that it is an inhuman force trying to possess her. The spirit’s intentions become more sinister as it tries to pull Jenny away from her father, possibly to kill her and claim her soul, much like other demonic spirits seen in horror films. However, in the final moments, Jenny fights back and manages to pull herself onto the ledge, rejecting the entity’s control. When she calls out to her “mommy,” it triggers a reaction in the spirit; instead of taking her, the spirit seems to realize that it cannot force her and that love—possibly Maggie’s love—was stronger than its possessiveness. The scene reveals that Maggie’s spirit was trying to communicate and protect Jenny from the real danger: the nanny Samantha, who had run Maggie over in a jealous bid to be with Jeff. Samantha’s death at the spirit’s hands, and her subsequent attempt to harm Jenny, underscores that it was Maggie’s love that brought her back and kept her close, rather than a malicious or demonic force. Ultimately, the spirit, recognizing that it cannot win, finds peace, allowing Jenny and Jeff to survive. The mid-credits scene suggests that a doll may still be lurking, hinting that a darker presence might remain, perhaps waiting to return or to possess Jenny through her dolls. This ending leaves a haunting ambiguity—whether the spirit was truly Maggie’s or if something even darker is lurking—highlighting the story’s theme that love and the bonds we forge can transcend even death, but might also leave us vulnerable to unseen forces.
