Maya Vargas is about to turn forty and lives in Queens, New York, working as an assistant manager at a grocery store where she has been employed for fifteen years. Her birthday party highlights her dissatisfaction with her life and her longing for more exciting experiences.

Maya's friend Joan arranges an interview for her at the conglomerate Franklin and Clarke as a birthday gift, unbeknownst to Maya. She impresses top executives, including Anderson Clarke, with her impressive resume, which includes Harvard, Wharton, and the Peace Corps.
