Two drifters, Max Millan, a short-tempered ex-convict, and Francis Lionel “Lion” Delbuchi, a childlike former sailor, cross paths on a road through California and strike up a clear, if uneasy, partnership. They agree to team up for a car-wash venture once they reach Pittsburgh, with each man bringing a different set of instincts to the budding plan—Max’s wary pragmatism and Lion’s sunny, impulsive streak. Their pact is simple on the surface, but the pair are already carrying the weight of past decisions, and the road ahead will test both their loyalty to one another and their ability to adapt when the world pushes back.
Their journey takes a detour to Denver, where Max visits his sister and the two men’s carefree life collides with consequences they hadn’t anticipated. A brush with the law lands them in a prison farm for a month, and the stay strains their bond. Max blames Lion for the setback, and the two drift apart, each retreating into their own fragile world. The split is deepened when Lion befriends a troubled inmate named Riley, who becomes fixated on Lion in a threatening, predatory way. When Lion resists Riley’s advances, violence erupts: Riley beats Lion, inflicts broken teeth, and blinds him in one eye, leaving Lion emotionally scarred and haunted by the assault.
Despite the pain and anger, Max and Lion find their way back to one another. Max becomes a protective presence, and his fierce resolve to defend Lion culminates in a harsh, consequential act of revenge against Riley. The episode marks a turning point in both men—each has changed, and their relationship has shifted in the process. Lion, once the lighthearted, carefree traveler, is now visibly traumatized, and the weight of what happened to him colors every moment of his life. Max, for his part, learns to temper his high-strung aggression, showing a gentler, more give-and-take side as he helps Lion navigate the ongoing aftermath of the violence.
The bond between them deepens as they continue their journey toward Detroit, with moments that reveal both their resilience and their vulnerability. A moment of levity emerges when Max defuses a tense bar fight with a self-deprecating, almost performative striptease that brings a much-needed laugh to Lion and to the uneasy atmosphere around them. This light touch contrasts with the darker undercurr of their experiences, underscoring how far each man has come from where they started.
Upon reaching Detroit, the pair faces a bitter truth about Lion’s past. Lion calls Annie, the woman who bore his child, from a payphone, only to discover that she is now married to another man and raising Lion’s five-year-old son. Annie’s anger remains fierce, and she coldly claims that she miscarried the child he never met. The revelation strikes Lion with devastating force: he pretends to share Max’s apparent joy about having a son, even as inwardly he is crushed by the lie and the severing of a future he had imagined. The emotional toll of this discovery reverberates through Lion’s psyche, coloring every subsequent moment.
In the days that follow, Lion’s fragility comes to the fore. While playing with children in a city park, he experiences a profound psychological breakdown, slipping into a state that resembles catatonia. The scene marks a stark turning point, one that tests the limits of Max’s commitment to their pact. Faced with a friend who teeters on the edge of collapse, Max makes a solemn promise to do whatever it takes to help Lion. With that vow, he boards a train back toward Pittsburgh, carrying with him a round-trip ticket and a determination that will define the next chapter of their odyssey.
What unfolds is a quiet, unromantic portrait of two men whose lives have been shaped by violence, loss, and a difficult, evolving friendship. They move through moments of tension and tenderness, fear and courage, all while the world around them keeps turning—unaware of how deeply they carry each other’s burdens. The journey is not a simple road to a promised end but a meditation on resilience, responsibility, and the fragile ways in which people can still find a way to reach toward redemption, even when the answers are not clear and the road ahead remains uncertain.
