Sathya (2017) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sathya (2017), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Sathya, Sibiraj, who works in Sydney, receives a voice call from his ex-lover Shweta Remya Nambeesan. They worked in the same office and had hoped to marry, but her father arranged an alliance with an entrepreneur named Gowtham. Sathya travels back to India under the pretense of attending a relatives’ wedding, renting a car from Babu Khan Sathish, a travel agent, and arranging a SIM card for his sister’s address, before checking into the Hotel Marriott.

Sathya meets Shweta at a restaurant and learns that her five-year-old daughter Ria is missing. The situation grows tense as only Shweta, and Gowtham, believe Ria exists, while Sathya also learns about Gowtham’s brother Bobby, a drug addict who regularly visits their home.

Sathya launches an informal investigation, but his efforts repeatedly hit dead ends, earning him the ire of two Afro-American gangsters in the city. Babu Khan, who helps with transporting drugs, comes to Sathya’s aid on humanitarian grounds. Impersonating police officer Vasanth Menon Balaji Venugopal, Sathya pursues Gowtham and discovers that the couple had no children. Gowtham recalls Shweta being attacked by two masked men before a school to steal her car; after a coma, she began claiming she had a five-year-old daughter named Ria. Sathya then spots a CCTV clip of the assault, but Ria does not appear, which casts doubt on Shweta’s condition.

Sathya confronts Shweta, who refuses to acknowledge that Ria exists. He notices height markings of a child on a wall, and before he can react, Shweta commits suicide. ACP Anuya Bharathwaj [Varalaxmi Sarathkumar] and Police Inspector Chowdary [Anandaraj] begin investigating the suicide. Vasanth Menon is killed at Marriott, and Babu confesses to Sathya that he saw Bobby kidnapping Ria. They meet Anuya and Chowdary and secure Bobby’s arrest. In custody, Bobby is killed by Anuya in self-defense. That same night, the murderers who killed Vasanth attack Babu and Sathya, and Babu dies in the crossfire while shooting back.

Sathya watches an MMS on the murderers’ phone that appears to be sent by Anuya instructing them to kill him. He later meets Anuya at her farmhouse, where Ria is hidden. Anuya reveals Gowtham’s plan to destroy Ria and explains that she found Ria in Bobby’s custody.

Gowtham is arrested and forced to admit that Ria is not his daughter, citing a medical report that showed him sterile in the past. Sathya recollects the last night they spent together in India before they separated, recalling that they had intercourse; as he pieces together the memory, he realizes that Ria is his biological daughter, and the moment is marked by the sight of a reflection of Shweta smiling back at him.
