The film opens by introducing Appala Narsayya, a simple, loyal clerk, his wife Godavari, and their four children living under one roof. The brave maid Chilakamma moves freely among them, becoming a trusted part of the family. Prakash is tight-fisted and keen to save money, while Uma, his generous wife, receives warmth from everyone.

A marriage broker arranges Sarojini's alliance with Jaganatham's son. Sarojini rejects it initially, causing the groom's party to leave in disappointment. Appala Narsayya goes to apologize to Jaganatham, hoping to smooth things over.

Appala Narsayya chooses a match for Raghava with Vasantha, trusting his son's prospects. Sarojini reveals she desires to marry Catholic Peter Samuel, which Appala initially resists. Uma persuades him to consider the unconventional alliance.

Edmund Samuel, Peter's father, approves Sarojini's marriage to his son. Prakash objects due to expenses, but Uma helps sway him. The two weddings proceed, blending traditional and cross-cultural choices.

Uma's pregnancy advances, and the family anticipates the new arrival. At the same time, Kalidasu develops a crush on a newcomer Meena who arrives from Bombay. Meena's presence stirs tension and sets the stage for future emotional entanglements.

A rift emerges between Raghava and Vasantha as Vasantha tutors Kalidasu during his education. Kalidasu's infatuation with Meena complicates their relationship further. The couple's marital harmony is strained as responsibilities and jealousy come into play.

Sarojini's belligerence towards her father-in-law intensifies, prompting Peter to rebuke and the couple to move out of the in-laws' apartment. Tensions flare and the family splits emotionally. Jaganatham's conditions force their temporary separation.

A financial conflict arises as Prakash reduces his monthly contribution, aggravating Uma's absence. Appala Narasayya publicly disowns Prakash and forces him to leave until loans are repaid. The father undertakes multiple side jobs, hoping to keep the family from collapsing.

Uma returns to help and discovers the family conflict. Edmund Samuel arrives at Appala Narsayya's residence with divorce papers, leading to Sarojini's shock. Chilakamma and Godavari pressure Sarojini to sign, and Edmund graciously pardons Peter and his father, complicating loyalties.

Uma tries to reconcile Raghava and Vasantha, which leads to a planned honeymoon. Disaster strikes when Vasantha contracts smallpox, forcing them to reassess their married life and responsibilities.

Kalidasu clears his examinations and celebrates his success. He proposes to Meena, who, however, returns to Bombay, leaving Kalidasu heartbroken. The brief joy is overshadowed by Meena's departure.

Uma experiences mixed feelings as the family remains divided and still resists her influence. Godavari supports Uma, and Appala Narasayya declares her dead and forbids any contact. He drinks in despair as the family fractures.

Uma defies her husband by choosing to mend relationships rather than force a full reunion. She advocates for a harmonious arrangement that allows each unit to live separately yet stay connected. The family agrees to meet on weekends, while Prakash and Uma start living apart.
