Saints and Soldiers: The Void

In May 1945, remnants of the German army cling to the Harz mountains as the war in Europe barrels toward its end. The opening narration explains a widening rift between the Allied spearhead and the stubborn rearguard, a stretch of land the Americans nickname The Void because it’s scarred with battle debris and slow, brutal fights. An American M18 Hellcat tank destroyer, The Avenging Angel, blasts the watchtower of a German POW camp, triggering a mass escape that includes the British lieutenant Goss, Ben Urie. The moment underlines how quickly chaos can swing when captured soldiers seize a chance to run.

The next day, the freed prisoners are slated to move to the rear by convoy. Two of the trucks are piloted by Sergeant Jesse Owens, K. Danor Gerald, and Private Perry, Alex Boyé. Owens, an African-American noncommissioned officer, confronts a tense reception from some white soldiers who doubt his leadership, planting a seed of conflict that threads through the mission.

Captain Briton McConkie, Jeff Birk, orders Sgt. John Atwood, Tim Shoemaker, who commands the Angel, and Sgt. Max Whitaker, Joel Bishop, who leads another M18 nicknamed the Annie, to push through a still-defended corridor. Their crew includes Corporal Carey Simms, Adam Gregory, Private Daniel Barlow, Matthew Meese, and Rodney Mitchell, Michael Todd Behrens. Tensions flare between Owens’ and Perry’s truck team and the Angel crew as they push forward into a landscape littered with danger and distrust.

The convoy’s fragile momentum is shattered when a German Panzer III tank lies in wait along the road. Perry’s truck is blown apart by the ambush, its occupants killed, and Owens’ truck comes under fire, leaving only Owens and Goss alive to escape. After a tense crossing, the two M18 crews cross paths with Owens and Goss and realize the Germans have more than one tank waiting to pounce: three tanks are spotted, ready to pin them down.

In a grim turn, the Annie is knocked out of the fight and Whitaker is killed, while the Angel manages to retreat but Atwood is killed in the action. Owens and Simms argue about the right move forward. Simms, who is white, refuses to take orders from Owens, who outranks him, and accuses him of courting danger for his own reputation. Yet their disagreement is interrupted by the sudden appearance of another Panzer. The two men decide to stay and fight, improvising with an artillery piece nearby. They score a hit that, while they initially miss, unsettles the German tank enough to force a retreat.

Despite a jammed turret that forces the Angel to aim by rotating the entire vehicle, the crew uses the improvised setup to strike back, destroying the Panzer. Owens and Simms slip away through evasive maneuvers, and they pistol-whip a small German unit holed up in a house, seizing a Panzerfaust to finish their encounter with the armored threat. An improvised antenna allows the Angel to contact HQ, revealing that an Allied jeep carrying a general could soon drive into the same ambush they’re trying to escape.

The backstories embedded in the firefight deepen the tension. Owens’s history reveals a previous command of a largely African-American unit in the Ardennes, whose recon mission turned suicidal and left him bearing scars from a confrontation with an officer. Goss’s tale traces his escape from a POW camp with two other soldiers, only for a brutal German officer, Shoenbeck, to capture the pair later and force them to play a life-threatening game of Russian roulette. Shoenbeck—a litany of cruelty with roots as a tank-training instructor who came out of retirement to command the very Panzer unit they now face—puts the men’s resolve to the test.

With the odds stacked against them, Goss takes a stand on foot and releases the squad’s final act of defiance. He disables a German tank by shooting its commander, climbs aboard, and kills the crew through the hatch. Facing Shoenbeck’s men, Goss takes one hostage, but Shoenbeck shoots his own subordinate in response and nearly ends the standoff—until another soldier turns the tables and shoots Shoenbeck in the back, forcing a surrender.

Back on the battlefield, the Angel lures the last German tank into a cellar trap. Owens, hidden in the cellar, fires a Panzerfaust at the tank’s underside, bringing it to a decisive halt. In the aftermath, Barlow and Mitchell reconcile the earlier quarrels that chilled their unit, and Simms and Owens forge a stronger bond as the crew presses toward the end of their perilous engagement. The mission—their courage, prejudice, and grit—coalesces into a hard-won testament to the resilience of soldiers who fight not just the enemy, but the strain within their own ranks.
