Sahasam (2013) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Sahasam (2013), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

2003: A Pakistani archaeologist, Dr. M. Alam Siddiqui, after seeking permission from the Government of Pakistan, begins researching the hidden treasure of King Kanishka. The legend says the treasure map is concealed inside an old box whose key rests in a Garuda locket, a key that was last seen in the research notebooks of a British archaeologist named David. Siddiqui leads a team that includes Dilawar, Raj Singh Arora, as they press deeper, tracing clues until they locate the box in an old market in Pakistan. But fate takes a brutal turn when a dreaded terrorist named Sultan, Shakti Kapoor, and his men Storm the archaeology department. Sultan coerces Siddiqui, seizes the box, and reduces the staff to slaves in his bid to seize the treasure. The relentless search continues as Siddiqui and his team are compelled to chase the map, while the threat of violence hangs over everyone involved. The story unfolds with mounting tension as the possibility of a priceless, ancient haul tempts every side, forcing decisions that blur the line between duty and greed.

2013: In Hyderabad, Gautham Kumar Varma is a bold but money-driven security guard who believes in the idea of making easy money yet insists he would not claim even a single crore if it isn’t his, and would never relinquish a penny if it is his. He spends his days testing his luck with lottery tickets and gadgets that supposedly bring fortune, but neither gambit yields results. His four friends share a cramped life in a slum colony, and curiosity about a 1000-rupee note lands him in trouble after the ATM he privately tinkers with is robbed by a gang. Gautham’s quick action helps catch the thieves, but CCTV footage reveals his role, leading to a punishment that sends him to a dumping yard where he must toil for long hours. A heavy rainstorm arrives one night, and the roof of his room collapses, unveiling a diary, an old bag stamped with “Pushkalavathi Jewelers, Peshawar,” a Garuda locket, two magnifying lenses, and a small stone with a distinctive design. The diary’s narration, spoken by his grandfather Satyanarayana Varma, reveals a backstory of partition-era peril, when the wealthy were preyed upon and diamonds vanished into legendary hideaways. Satyanarayana Varma’s daring escape to a cave sealed his fate with a promise: 900 diamonds would someday pass to his grandson. Pursued by fate, Gautham embarks on a journey that takes him to Pakistan with Sreenidhi, Taapsee Pannu, a devout Hindu woman seeking to visit Hinglaj Mata temple, and with Khayamat Raju, Ali Basha.

In Hinglaj Mata Temple, Gautham discovers his grandfather’s name carved on a stone slab, and locals explain that archaeologists once traced this lineage. He brings the Garuda locket to the archaeology department, where Thilavar now presides after Siddiqui’s brutal murder, and learns the next clue points toward Peshawar. Gautham steadfastly refuses Sultan’s offer of money, gold, or any combination, insisting the locket belongs to him. The trio—Gautham, Sreenidhi, and Khayamat Raju—evade capture and press on, heading toward a safe hideout. Sreenidhi’s fate becomes tangled in a dangerous game when she is forced into a Buzkashi contest and abducted as part of a ransom-like arrangement; a masked Gautham steps in, wins by parking her in the game, and the trio moves forward, resurfacing in a hospital in Peshawar.

The next morning brings a shocking revelation: Zara, Paru Gambhir (Siddiqui’s daughter), has kidnapped Sreenidhi and offers a street address to meet her. Gautham, Zara, and Sreenidhi converge on the realization that the box containing the map sits inside Sultan’s house. They infiltrate the residence, disable the power, and retrieve the map, with Gautham donning a disguise and slipping through the guards. The box is taken, and the Garuda locket becomes the guiding symbol as the map points to Hinglaj. Arrangements must be made: five wheels must be aligned in a precise order to drain water from a well and reveal a hidden chamber behind a circular door.

Sultan arrives and a tense standoff unfolds as the group navigates a treacherous route. Gautham sacrifices speed for precision, removing a bomb from his own back with Zara’s help and escaping with the map. They reach the Hinglaj site, where the wheel configuration is completed, the water recedes, and they descend into a subterranean chamber. A series of dramatic trials follows: a drum surrounded by countless metal chains that respond to sound, a hidden trident lock that must be manipulated just so, and a perilous corridor where the floor tiles act as a deadly minefield guided by motion and arrows. Gautham’s steady hand steadies the way, and the chains reset after his deft move with the trident, enabling the group to proceed.

Inside the next chamber, a final confrontation awaits: Thilavar and Sultan confront Gautham as they attempt to seize the treasure. A brutal fight erupts, and Thilavar is killed in a trap of arrows when a misstep reopens the lethal mechanism. The showdown with Sultan intensifies until Zara intervenes, reveals her own motives, and shoots Sultan, altering the balance of power. Zara explains that she had fallen to the other side and used the path she discovered to reach the chamber, guiding the trio to safety. The treasure—the 900 diamonds amassed by Satyanarayana Varma—comes into view, its gleam reflecting the long, complicated journey.

In the end, the wealth is not kept by Gautham or Zara alone. Zara fulfills Siddiqui’s last wish by handing the entire fortune over to the Government of Pakistan, leaving Gautham with no claim on a single diamond. He refuses any reward, choosing instead the satisfaction of having helped recover a legacy that spans generations. The tale closes on the note that some riches are meant to serve a higher purpose, and that true treasure lies in what one does with it for the greater good.
