Dirk receives a rare gold Confederate coin from a dealer in Nigeria, one of only five known to exist. Since such coins would only circulate near where the Texas was last seen, Dirk deduces that the coin washed up from the ship's location in the Niger River area. This clue prompts him to organize an expedition to search for the lost ironclad.

Foreshadowing: The coin's rare origin suggests it came from the same location as the Texas.

Al stumbles upon a cave painting depicting the ironclad Texas resting in what appears to be a dry riverbed.
