What Happens in Saboot: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Saboot (1980) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Seth Dharamdas, a shrewd patriarch with two daughters, Asha and Kajal, finds himself entangled in a high-stakes business deal with Dhanraj. Asha, Vidya Sinha, marries her true love Vikas, but tragedy strikes when an air crash takes Vikas away. In the wake of this loss, Dharamdas cancels his plan to sell the factory and instead chooses to honor Vikas by dedicating the factory as a keepsake to his memory.

Dhanraj, Prem Chopra, is determined not to let the deal slip away. He secretly bribes Dharamdas's trusted aides—Manmohan Saxena, Ashok Gupta and Rita—to orchestrate Dharamdas's murder. On a business trip to Nainital, Dharamdas is intercepted on a train by Dhanraj, Ashok and Manmohan, who coerce him into signing an agreement that makes Dhanraj the sole owner of all his riches. The crooks kill him and bury his body nearby. In the ensuing struggle, Ashok's knife slips into the grave, and he cannot retrieve it in time.

Asha and Kajal remain unaware of the truth, believing their father has simply disappeared. Inspector Anand, Navin Nischol, an old friend of Vikas, is called in to handle the case and begins to connect the dots.

Then a supernatural twist unsettles everyone: the ghost of Dharamdas confronts his killers, filling them with fear as they begin to die under mysterious circumstances. Anand soon discerns a link between these deaths and Dharamdas's disappearance. He suspects that Dharamdas might still be alive and is somehow enacting revenge from beyond the grave. To uncover the truth, Anand sets clever traps and follows a trail of dread and deception.

The tension peaks when Dhanraj meets his end, and in a climactic moment, Anand believes he glimpses Dharamdas and fires. The story closes on a haunting note, where vengeance, guilt, and a detective’s relentless pursuit of truth collide, leaving the remaining questions to linger in the air.

Why did Seth Dharamdas cancel the factory sale after Vikas's death?

Q3

What happened to Dharamdas on the train to Nainital?

The supernatural killings created panic among the remaining conspirators, who feared the vengeful spirit was punishing them for the murder. Inspector Anand initially suspected a living person was feigning ghostly revenge.

Foreshadowing: The moment Ashok lost his knife in the grave added a symbolic element suggesting the murder would not stay hidden.

  • ghost revenge
  • supernatural deaths

Q5

How did Inspector Anand get involved in the case?

Inspector Anand was called in to handle the case because he was an old friend of Vikas, the deceased husband of Dharamdas's daughter Asha. He began connecting the mysterious deaths to Dharamdas's disappearance and suspected someone was using the ghost story as cover for real revenge.

  • police investigation
  • inspector anand
  • vikas connection
Q6

Was Dharamdas really a ghost or was someone impersonating him?

The movie leaves the nature of the vengeful force ambiguous. Inspector Anand eventually believes he sees Dharamdas and fires at him, but the ending never confirms whether it was actually Dharamdas's ghost, a living person pretending to be him, or if Dharamdas survived somehow. This ambiguity is central to the story's tension.

Foreshadowing: The ongoing mystery of whether the killer is human or supernatural was set up from the first ghostly confrontation.

  • ghost twist
  • ambiguous ending
  • supernatural mystery
Q7

What was the significance of Ashok's knife being left in the grave?

Q8

Why was Dhanraj so determined to kill Dharamdas?

Foreshadowing: The business deal between Dhanraj and Dharamdas established the financial stakes that motivated the conspiracy.

  • dhanraj motive
  • wealth
  • murder for money
Q9

What happened in the climactic ending when Anand shot the figure?

In the climactic confrontation, Dhanraj was killed, exposing the conspiracy. When Inspector Anand believed he saw Dharamdas, he fired his gun at the figure. The ending leaves it unclear whether Anand actually shot Dharamdas or some other person, maintaining the supernatural ambiguity.

  • climactic ending
  • anand shoots
  • confrontation
Q10

Why did Rita betray Dharamdas and join the conspiracy?

Rita was one of Dharamdas's trusted employees whom Dhanraj bribed to participate in the murder plot.
