Rise of the Zombies

A water-borne virus triggers a zombie outbreak across San Francisco, forcing a small group of survivors to hole up on Alcatraz Island. The refuge is tense and under-resourced, and the settlers cling to a fragile sense of safety as they consider their next moves.

Dr. Lynn Snyder arrives and integrates with a mix of scientists and caretakers. The group holds on to safety while rumors of a possible breakthrough circulate, giving them a glimmer of hope amid the chaos.

Communications from mainland scientist Dr. Arnold hint at a potential cure, spurring cautious optimism. Meanwhile Dr. Dan Halpern pushes his own work forward, studying what he can from the infected, constrained by scarce supplies. The two research threads struggle to gain traction under isolation.

Halpern continues his grim study, collecting samples from the dead in a race against time. The island’s limited lab space and dwindling supplies hamper progress, making any breakthrough feel distant.

Caspian and other refugees burn zombie corpses stored on the island, attempting to curb the spread. The act underscores the desperation of the survivors and their willingness to take drastic measures to keep the virus at bay.

A massive wave of infected surges onto Alcatraz, triggering panic and rapid, desperate actions. The attack is repelled, but it comes at a cost: several refugees die, and two are infected, including Halpern’s daughter Julie.

With time running out, Halpern detonates a grenade to kill himself rather than be consumed by the virus. Julie is bitten in the chaos, sealing a heartbreaking moment for the group.

On land, the survivors split into factions as priorities diverge. Snyder pursues the lead on Dr. Arnold, hoping for a cure, while Caspian’s group scavenges for supplies and seeks a possible evacuation.

The envisioned evacuation point collapses under the undead, and hope falters. Ashley chooses a final act of despair, rolling a trolley into traffic to end her life.

The remaining trio makes their way to the city’s water treatment plant, where Arnold’s refuge is said to lie. There, Arnold reveals that his tests have yielded a potential vaccine, offering renewed hope.

Arnold explains that animal testing has produced a vaccine that can counter the virus. The revelation provides a tangible path toward recovery, even as the city remains chaotic.

With time running out, the survivors sprint to a rooftop helicopter and flee the city. Kyle and Marshall are briefly attacked, but the vaccine proves effective enough to save them.

As the group looks toward a new horizon, Arnold asks for a dedicated laboratory to manufacture the cure, clinging to cautious optimism that science can prevail and that a path to recovery might finally be within reach.
