Rise of the Gargoyles

Professor Jack Randall was once a respected academic, but he became discredited after publishing a book about gargoyles. The expert community rejected his claims about gargoyles being real, treating his work as pseudoscience. Despite being dismissed by the academic establishment, Jack remained convinced there was truth to his research, which is why he agrees to investigate the church site when his friend Carol Beckham urges him to go.

Two workers were digging beneath the Saint Jean André Church in Paris when they inadvertently uncovered a hidden chamber filled with valuable artifacts. Their excavation disturbed whatever was sealed within that chamber, allowing the gargoyle to escape. The workers were among the first victims beheaded by the creature.

Jack became the prime suspect because he was the last person seen with Carol Beckham before she was killed, and he had a powerful motive in the eyes of Inspector Gibert, Carol had encouraged him to investigate the church, and Jack had recently been associated with her. Additionally, Jack had no concrete evidence to support his story about a gargoyle, making his claims about a monster seem like a cover for murder.

The gargoyle is depicted as a winged creature that can fly and move through urban environments. While the exact method is not detailed, the creature managed to reach Carol's apartment independently, suggesting it can navigate buildings and access upper floors. The attack was brutal and resulted in Carol being beheaded.

Their goal was to uncover the source of the gargoyles and understand what the hidden artifacts signified. The decision marked a shift from survival mode to active investigation, setting up the next phase of the story.
