In the quiet coastal town of Akita, an aging fisherman named Takata Gouichi lives a rhythm shaped by the sea and the lingering ache of a family he has drifted from. Decades of loss have left his relationship with his only son, Kenichi, strained, a silence that deepens after the death of Gouichi’s wife. When word arrives that Kenichi is gravely ill, the fisherman is compelled to leave his familiar harbor and travel to the bustling streets of Tokyo, hoping a desperate visit might bridge the distance that years have carved.

A modest video tape, handed to him by Kenichi’s wife Rie, offers an unexpected thread of connection: it captures a Chinese Nuo‑opera performer, Li Jiamin, speaking of a forthcoming show titled “Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles.” Moved by a father’s yearning to honor his son from afar, Gouichi resolves to journey far beyond Japan’s shores, intending to document Li’s performance as a tribute that might echo back home. The decision sets him on a path that blends personal pilgrimage with an artistic quest, promising both a test of resolve and the possibility of unforeseen companionship.

Crossing the sea into the mist‑wrapped valleys of Yunnan, Gouichi finds himself immersed in a world where ancient songs rise from stone villages, and every corner hums with the pulse of tradition. With the aid of a local translator, Jiang Wen, and a guide named Qiu Lin, he navigates unfamiliar customs and landscapes, each step drawing him deeper into a tapestry of shared longing and quiet dignity.
