Staged in 1977, Carmelo Bene’s Riccardo III was adapted for television and aired in 1981. He dedicated it to Gilles Deleuze, who wrote a book on the piece before seeing it. Bene reduces Shakespeare to its core, discarding plot and most characters, leaving only Richard III, his ghosts and the female roles. Version uses close‑ups and strong contrast.
