Richard II, who inherited the throne as a child, presents himself as a regal, god‑ordained monarch. In reality he is weak and ineffective—lavish in spending, surrounded by poor advisers, and detached from his country and its people. After seizing his cousin Henry Bolingbroke's lands, commoners and barons deem his rule has gone too far.
