Rebecca

While working for Mrs. Van Hopper, portrayed by Ann Dowd, in the glamorous setting of Monte Carlo, a young woman becomes entangled with Maxim De Winter, played by Armie Hammer, a recent widower. Their romance blossoms during a brief courtship at the hotel where both are staying, especially when Mrs. Van Hopper falls ill and is advised to rest by her doctor. Just as their engagement develops, Mrs. Van Hopper uncovers their affair, prompting her to leave Europe for New York. Heartbroken, the girl confides in Maxim about her situation.

The couple marries and travels to Maxim’s grand estate, Manderley, where she encounters the imposing housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, portrayed by Kristin Scott Thomas. Mrs. Danvers had been fiercely loyal to Maxim’s first wife, Rebecca, who met her untimely end in a boating accident. The atmosphere at Manderley is thick with the memory of Rebecca, as both the staff and Maxim’s companions cherished her. Unfortunately, Mrs. De Winter is constantly reminded of her predecessor’s shadow; Mrs. Danvers takes pleasure in highlighting her perceived inferiority.

As time passes, Mrs. De Winter learns of Maxim’s troubling sleepwalking, where he finds himself wandering into Rebecca’s former quarters. During one of her explorations, she discovers an abandoned beach cottage and encounters groundskeeper Ben, who divulges the tragic truth that Rebecca drowned, explaining Maxim’s aversion to the sea. Driven by her emotions, Mrs. De Winter ultimately confronts Rebecca’s rooms, where Mrs. Danvers narrates tales of Maxim’s love for Rebecca, deepening the young bride’s insecurity. Enter Sam Riley as Jack Favell, who visits under suspicious circumstances, sparking anger from Maxim. Previously banned from Manderley, Favell’s return infuriates Maxim and results in accusations of infidelity toward Mrs. De Winter. Determined to clear her name, she seeks answers from Mrs. Danvers, who spins a tale of loyalty and past affection towards Rebecca.

As the two women begin to work together, assisting Mrs. De Winter in organizing the revived Manderley Costume Ball, an ill-fated choice leads Mrs. De Winter to wear a dress once donned by Rebecca. The shock it elicits from the guests—and Maxim’s furious reaction—causes her to believe that Rebecca’s memory still haunts their marriage. Feeling manipulated and desperate, she flees from Manderley, only for Mrs. Danvers to reveal her disdain for Mrs. De Winter, urging her to leap to her death. Fate intervenes when a storm reveals Rebecca’s wrecked boat with her decaying body inside.

This revelation reignites the investigation into Rebecca’s mysterious demise. Maxim reluctantly shares with his new wife that his previous marriage was a charade and confesses his true feelings about Rebecca—calling her cruel and deceitful. On the night of her death, she had claimed to be pregnant with another man’s child, threatening to ensnare him further in a lie. In a moment of rage, Maxim admits to killing her, which eventually leads to troubles with the law.

Amidst the tension of legal troubles, Tom Goodman-Hill as Frank Crawley stands by the couple, while Mrs. Danvers attempts to further complicate matters. The trial exposes the truth about Rebecca’s past, revealing her relationship with Favell and casting shadows upon Maxim. Ultimately, evidence proves Rebecca could not have been pregnant due to an illness, suggesting suicide as the reason behind her demise. In a climactic turn of fate, Maxim is absolved, but when they return to Manderley, they find it engulfed in flames—a devastating act committed by the vengeful Mrs. Danvers.

The tale reaches its poignant climax on the cliffs, where Mrs. De Winter pleads with Mrs. Danvers not to jump to her death which she ultimately does, leaving behind a haunting legacy. Years later, as Mrs. De Winter dreams of the future with Maxim, they embark on a quest to find a new home, free from the ghosts of the past, in a story woven with love, betrayal, and the haunting echoes of a life once lived.
