What Happens in Rattlers: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Rattlers (1976) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

When two young boys are savagely attacked and killed by a legion of rattlesnakes in a small California desert town, the local sheriff calls upon herpetologist Dr. Tom Sam Chew Jr. Parkinson, a Los Angeles college professor, to uncover why the snakes are displaying abnormal aggression and swarming behavior. The sheriff teams Parkinson with war photographer Elisabeth Chauvet as Ann Bradley to help document and understand the phenomenon.

As more people in the desert community fall to the deadly reptiles, Parkinson's and Bradley's investigation leads them to a nearby army base, where the commanding officer, Colonel Dan Priest Stroud, seems strangely reluctant to help them. The base's chief medical officer, Captain Ronald Gold Delaney, offers limited support, but his presence provides a crucial foothold for the inquiry.

Shortly afterward, Palmer Darwin Joston and Woodley Gary Van Ormand, two soldiers on night patrol, stop to change a flat tire on their jeep and are killed by a horde of rattlesnakes, heightening the sense of danger and raising questions about the base's role in the mounting crisis. Delaney then summons Parkinson and Bradley back to the base, this time without Stroud's knowledge, so they can investigate the soldiers' strange deaths more closely.

Parkinson's findings point to a chilling conspiracy: the colonel ordered, and then concealed, the illegal disposal of an experimental nerve gas called CT3 in a desert cave. The exposure of the snakes to CT3 has altered their behavior, making them unusually aggressive and hard to predict. When Delaney confronts Stroud and threatens to expose the crime, Stroud kills him, before engaging the local sheriff's department in a gun battle that ends with Stroud's own death.

Rattlers Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Rattlers (1976): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why are the rattlesnakes suddenly attacking people?

The snakes have been contaminated by CT3 nerve gas that was illegally dumped in a desert cave by the military. The exposure to the nerve gas altered their behavior, making them unusually aggressive and causing them to attack humans without the normal warning rattles.

Foreshadowing: Earlier scenes show the snakes displaying abnormal swarming behavior before the cause is revealed.

  • rattlesnake attacks
  • aggressive snakes
  • snake behavior
  • snake swarm
Q2

What is CT3 nerve gas and how did it affect the snakes?

CT3 is an experimental nerve gas that Colonel Stroud ordered disposed of illegally in a desert cave near the military base. When the snakes encountered the gas, it contaminated them and turned them into lethal, unpredictable attackers that strike without provocation.

Foreshadowing: The pattern of snake attacks follows a geographic trail leading toward the base.

  • CT3 nerve gas
  • military experiment
  • snake contamination
  • chemical weapon
Q3

Why does Colonel Stroud refuse to cooperate with the investigation?

Stroud deliberately obstructs the investigation because he ordered and concealed the illegal disposal of CT3 nerve gas in a desert cave. His refusal to help is an attempt to protect himself from being exposed for this crime.

Foreshadowing: Stroud shows reluctance to assist from the moment the investigators approach the base.

  • Colonel Stroud
  • military cover-up
  • investigation obstruction
  • reluctance
Q4

Why does Colonel Stroud kill Captain Delaney?

Delaney confronts Stroud while drunk and threatens to expose the illegal nerve gas disposal. Stroud responds by shooting and killing Delaney to silence him and protect the cover-up.

Foreshadowing: Delaney earlier offers limited cooperation with the investigators, hinting at his growing conscience.

  • Captain Delaney murder
  • Stroud killing
  • cover-up
  • conspiracy
Q5

How does Dr. Parkinson discover the cause of the snake attacks?

Parkinson traces the pattern of snake attacks to the nearby military base and investigates further. He eventually uncovers that Colonel Stroud ordered the illegal disposal of CT3 nerve gas in a desert cave, which contaminated the snakes and caused their aggressive behavior.

  • Dr. Parkinson investigation
  • snake attack cause
  • discovery
  • herpetologist
Q6

What happens to Colonel Stroud at the end of the movie?

Stroud kills Delaney to silence him, then engages the local sheriff's department in a gun battle attempting to maintain control. During the firefight, Stroud is killed, ending his bid to cover up the nerve gas crime.

Foreshadowing: The escalating tension between Stroud and Delaney builds to the violent confrontation.

  • Colonel Stroud death
  • final confrontation
  • gun battle

Q7

Why was nerve gas disposed of in the desert?

  • illegal disposal
  • military crime
  • desert cave
  • CT3 dumping
Q8

Are the snakes still a threat at the end of the movie?

While Colonel Stroud is killed, the problem of the contaminated snakes remains unresolved. The snakes continue to pose a lethal threat to the desert community, leaving a lingering sense of danger despite the human antagonist's death.

Foreshadowing: The movie provides no solution to the snake problem, only removing the human villain.
