Lost in the desert, officers Saint‑Avit and Morhange become prisoners of Antinéa, the queen of Atlantis. Enamored, Saint‑Avit obeys her order to kill his comrade. Pabst adapts Benoît’s novel as a psycho‑analytic fantasy, depicting a dominant woman who enslaves and destroys her lovers. The film moves through a humid desert, with a flashback hinting at Antinéa’s Parisian origins—a French can‑can dancer and an Arab prince—leaving truth as elusive as the sands.
