A violent gang led by Benjamin sits in a car, guarding a mysterious package as they drive toward a rural farm. The tension centers on the package and Benjamin's volatile leadership. The scene establishes the ransom plot that will unfold at the farmhouse.

The gang storms the farmhouse and takes the family hostage. Benjamin threatens that there is money in the house and that the family must surrender it or face harm, while the family insists they are poor and have nothing to offer. Tensions rise as the intruders impose their will and the family tries to comprehend the danger.

A henchman begins taking measurements of the family members' necks, and Ofelia turns out to be the 'desired' size. Benjamin reveals the contents of the package and uses PVC pipes to assemble a collar bomb around Ofelia's neck. The device is strapped on, and the family watches in horror as the threat becomes tangible.

Benjamin orders the family to lie on their stomachs while the gang departs, leaving the device strapped to Ofelia. The family quickly realizes the device is dangerous, but they do not know how to remove it. Panic and fear set in as they wait for the gang's next move.

The family finds a cassette in the package and plays it, revealing a ransom of 15 million pesos and a warning not to tamper with the device or contact the police. They decide to seek help despite the warning. The message clearly sets the terms and the stakes of the situation.

The national guard and the army react quickly, coordinating a plan to meet the family at a distant point to remove the device. The defusal will be dangerous and requires careful execution with limited tools. The plan brings in a sense of urgency as time ticks away.

A neighbor initially agrees to drive the family to the meeting point but recoils when he realizes the device is a bomb. He orders them to get out of the car, forcing the family to continue on foot toward safety. They later encounter two men with a wagon who offer them a ride for a stretch.

The device begins to beep, heightening the sense of danger for Ofelia and the family. Passersby and onlookers begin to gather as the rescue plan unfolds along the roadside. The tension reaches a fever pitch as they approach the meeting point.

Jairo, a bomb squad officer, arrives at the scene and begins examining the device. Lacking proper tools, he improvises with a kitchen knife, a candle, and a lighter while a perimeter is established. The clock ticks as the improvised attempt unfolds under intense public scrutiny.

Jairo removes a piece of the device and reveals the explosive component, but the detonation releases toxic fumes from a hidden chemical detonator. Ofelia goes into respiratory arrest, and paramedics rush to assist her. The moment is chaotic, but there is a glimmer of hope as she begins to breathe again with help.

The CO congratulates Jairo on the apparent removal of the chemical detonator and moves toward the safe zone. Moments later, the bomb detonates, killing Ofelia and sending a shock through the crowd. Jairo is left lying on the ground with burns, his ultimate fate unclear.

The family rushes to the blast site in shock, facing the loss of Ofelia. The youngest daughter watches in horror and asks, 'Why God, why?' The fates of Jairo and the gang are left ambiguous as the film ends.
