In a remote region of Colombia, a gun-toting gang United under a violent leader named Benjamin guards a mysterious package as they drive to a farmhouse. They storm the house, seize the family, and declare that there’s money in exchange for their safety, even though the family insists they are poor and have never seen real wealth. Benjamin grabs the husband, Simon, at gunpoint while one of his men begins taking neck measurements from every family member. The only person who seems to fit the “desired” size is Simon’s wife, Ofelia. From the package, the gang unveils two PVC pipes and a handful of devices, and they assemble a deadly collar bomb that clasps around Ofelia’s neck.

The family is forced to lie face down on the floor as the gang departs, leaving them in a state of stunned fear. Once alone, they scramble to figure out what the device is and how to remove it, but the collar remains stubbornly sealed around Ofelia. In the package, they discover a cassette tape—a ransom demand of 15 million pesos paired with a stern warning not to tamper with the device or contact the police. With no immediate money to offer, the family makes a desperate call to the authorities through a neighbor, hoping to orchestrate a rescue.

The nation’s security forces respond with speed. A plan is arranged to meet with Ofelia at a distant location so the bomb can be removed, but the transportation route is long and uncertain. A hesitant neighbor agrees to drive them, only to realize the gravity of the situation and moments later urge them to get out when he grasps that they’re carrying a bomb. Forced to continue on foot, the family finds shelter in an unlikely ride with two strangers pushing a wagon along the nearby train tracks. The ominous beeping of the device grows louder, turning the journey into a tense march toward danger.

At the designated meeting point, bomb squad officer Jairo steps in. He begins the delicate and exhausting process of disarming the device, improvising with a kitchen knife, a candle, and a lighter since proper tools are unavailable. The crowd surrounding the perimeter grows as curious onlookers press closer, drawn by the unfolding crisis. Ofelia, who had started out relatively composed, spirals into visible distress as the danger escalates. When Jairo asks her to “excuse her for a second,” she responds with a stark, heart-wrenching line:

The improvised attempt slowly makes progress as Jairo manages to remove a piece of the device and reveals the explosive core inside. Yet the threat proves far more complicated than it appears, as the collar vents toxic fumes from a hidden chemical detonator. Jairo narrowly avoids the fumes, but Ofelia is not so lucky in the moment and falls into respiratory distress. Paramedics rush to her aid, and she briefly regains her breath, reassured by Jairo’s competence and the CO’s calm orders to keep going.

With a final effort, Jairo extracts the chemical detonator and informs his commanding officer, who praises the lifesaving work and reassures Ofelia that she will be all right. The moment of relief is brief, however—the camera shifts, the perimeter tightens, and a sudden blast rips through the air. The scene cuts to the frantic reactions of the family racing toward the blast site, only to discover that the bomb has detonated despite every precaution. Jairo lies on the ground, his arm severely burned, leaving his own fate unclear as the film lingers on the ominous aftermath.

The focus then shifts to Ofelia’s youngest daughter, who watches in horror from a distance. In a quiet, devastating close, the girl cries out to the void, asking “Why God, why?” as the screen fades to black. The fates of Jairo and the gang remain unresolved, leaving a lingering question about who survived, who didn’t, and how a single impulsive act of violence can unravel a family’s life in an instant.

The film’s stark tableau—gritty, claustrophobic, and deeply human—puts a spotlight on fear, choice, and the cost of attempting to outsmart a threat that feeds on desperation. It moves briskly through danger and procedure, blending the raw tension of a hostage crisis with the meticulous, almost ritualized work of a bomb squad trying to save a life under the most unforgiving of timelines.
