Piano Girl is set in a borderland village near Kars in Eastern Anatolia, following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. His death becomes a turning point that helps Popuç reconsider old grudges.

Popuç is a sharp-tongued village storekeeper whose deep resentment toward Mişka stems from a past romance thwarted by religious divisions. She embodies the community's fear of change and stubborn pride. Over the course of the film, her long memory and initial stubbornness are gradually tempered as she comes to terms with burying Mişka with dignity, highlighting the possibility of forgiveness.

Alma is the youngest granddaughter with a remarkable musical talent who learns piano from Mişka. She embodies hope and possibility for the village's future. Her gift allows her to study at the Kars music academy, and she serves as a bridge between eras, helping illuminate buried histories and guiding elders like Popuç toward reconciliation.
