In the winding corridors of Algiers’ Casbah, a notorious thief known as Pépé le Moko (Jean Gabin) has managed to remain concealed for nearly two years, thanks to his cleverness and the support of the locals. While Inspector Slimane (Lucas Gridoux) tirelessly pursues him, Pépé’s whereabouts remain a enigma, hidden deep within the intricate layout of his surroundings. Yet, his life has become a tedious cycle of monotony, overshadowed by the ever-looming threat of apprehension, like a sword hanging over him.

Everything changes when Gaby (Mireille Balin), an enchanting Parisian woman, steps into his life one fateful evening, igniting a fierce longing in Pépé’s heart. Complications arise as Régis, a local tied to the authorities, devises a scheme to use Pierrot, one of Pépé’s closest confidants, as bait to flush him out of hiding. Unbeknownst to Pépé, Inspector Slimane is aware of this burgeoning romance and is setting a trap to catch him off guard by bringing Gaby to the Casbah.

As tensions begin to brew, a series of unpredictable events set in motion that threaten to dismantle Pépé’s carefully curated existence. The disappearance of Pierrot leads to a fateful showdown between Pépé and Régis, which tragically results in Régis’s death. Shortly thereafter, Gaby leaves without a word, plunging Pépé into emotional turmoil, exacerbated by Ines’s manipulations, which keep him rooted in his despair.

Driven by a desperate hope to reclaim Gaby’s affections, Pépé embarks on a frantic search for her through the serpentine streets and concealed squares of the Casbah. Just as he seems to be closing the gap, the ever-watchful Inspector Slimane delivers devastating news: Gaby has been misled to believe that Pépé is dead and is set to leave Algiers for good. Heartbroken, Pépé pours his feelings into a heartfelt note to Gaby, tasking Carlos with its delivery.

Ultimately, it is not the law that leads to Pépé’s downfall, but rather the weight of his own crushing heartbreak and despair. As he witnesses Gaby depart into the horizon, Pépé’s carefully constructed world crumbles, culminating in a tragic act of self-destruction that seals his fate forever.
