The film Tyler Perry Presents Peeples takes us through the lives of the affluent Peeples family as they gather for their cherished annual reunion, celebrated on Moby Dick Day in Sag Harbor, a picturesque spot in the Hamptons. The tranquil weekend takes an unexpected turn when Wade Walker, portrayed by Craig Robinson, suddenly shows up, hoping to propose to their daughter Grace, played by Kerry Washington. This impromptu proposal is spurred on by his brother Chris, but as Wade arrives, his troubles begin when a mishap with a family dog leads to the loss of his wallet.
While at a local grocery store, Wade stumbles upon Grace’s father, Virgil, identified by David Alan Grier, who is in a suspicious conversation with a woman later revealed to be the town mayor, hinting at a hidden affair. Meanwhile, intriguing dynamics unfold as Grace’s sister, Gloria, is seen in a secretive relationship with her lover, Meg.
As the weekend progresses, Wade unearths some shocking truths about Grace—like her former relationships and even her cosmetic enhancements. He learns from Grace’s mother, Daphne, portrayed by S. Epatha Merkerson, that she was a singer in the ’70s and has battled alcoholism. With the evening dinner approaching, Wade attempts to introduce a heartfelt family tradition, inviting everyone to share what they cherish most about each other. However, his gesture crumbles when Virgil reminds him of his lost wallet and his obligations to pay.
Later, Virgil steps out for a saxophone gig at a local club, which prompts Wade to follow him, only to realize he isn’t present. Instead, he encounters a group of nudists, unexpectedly discovering that Virgil is among them. Back at the guest house, Wade confronts Grace regarding her breast enhancements, and although she responds openly, things take a turn for the uncomfortable when Virgil unintentionally witnesses the moment.
Additionally, Wade uncovers that Grace’s brother, Simon, a gifted musician, also has a knack for thievery. Amidst comedic mishaps, including a misunderstanding that leads Virgil to believe Wade and Chris are fraternity brothers, Wade’s weekend spirals as stolen earrings lead to accusations against him.
The plan continues to unravel with moments of laughter alongside revelations, including Simon confessing his motivations behind stealing. The climax peaks at the Moby Dick Day celebration, where Wade’s frantic encounter with the mayor and his hallucinations culminate in an embarrassing escapade.
Ultimately, after Wade feels he has overstayed his welcome, he decides to leave with Chris, leading to a series of confessions from various family members about their secrets. Just when hopes are dimmed, the family dog returns Wade’s long-lost wallet, and Simon retrieves the engagement ring meant for Grace.
Realizing the depth of her feelings for Wade, Grace seeks him out after a few days of silence. She apologizes and presents her own proposition of marriage. In a heartfelt exchange, Wade reciprocates and makes a promise of honesty. The film concludes with a heartwarming reunion at the children’s museum, where Wade is finally embraced by the Peeples family while they all join him for an unforgettable musical performance. Melvin Van Peebles makes a captivating cameo as grandpa Peeples.
