Passport to Suez

Michael Lanyard, the Lone Wolf, travels to Alexandria to help the Allied cause in World War II. He is joined by his loyal valet, Llewellyn Jamison, and soon runs into his old contact Johnny Booth, a nightclub owner who runs a network of informants. This initial assignment pulls him into a dangerous espionage game in Axis-occupied territory.

Fritz arrives to drive Lanyard under the pretense of taking him to Sir Robert Wembley, head of British secret service. Instead, Lanyard is taken to meet Karl, the leader of a Nazi spy ring, who threatens to kill Jamison unless Lanyard cooperates. After a tense exchange, Lanyard agrees to work for Karl and is released, with Karl hinting that a trap is part of his plan.

Lanyard meets Wembley, who makes clear he does not want an amateur on the case, but reluctantly allows the Lone Wolf to play along to gather more information. Wembley emphasizes the stakes are too high for mistakes and that discretion is essential.

In Booth's nightclub, Lanyard and Jamison encounter Donald, Jamison's son, a British naval officer, and his fiancée Valerie King. Lanyard grows suspicious of Valerie, sensing she is not who she appears to be and may be playing both sides. The atmosphere thins the line between ally and traitor as espionage thickens.

In Booth's private office, Lanyard meets Rembrandt and Cézanne, who discuss their spy network. Cézanne reveals that the lace Valerie is knitting contains a secret message. Rembrandt shoots Cézanne, who dies in front of the nightclub, at Valerie King's feet.

Valerie King returns to her hotel room; Karl is waiting for her. She is one of Karl's agents, currently extracting information from Donald for their real goal, the minefields and defenses of the Suez Canal. Lanyard starts to see the scale of Valerie's deception and how it ties to the larger plan.

Whistler, another unscrupulous contact, approaches Lanyard with information for sale. He sells him the lace Valerie had sent to a laundry, which hides a crucial message. The message indicates that whatever the Nazis plan to do is to be finished by midnight.

Karl visits Lanyard and gives him the assignment to break into a safe at British Intelligence and steal some documents. It becomes clear that Lanyard's part is merely a distraction, and the real plans have already been stolen. Wembley orders the arrest of the Lone Wolf for treason, but Lanyard escapes.

Lanyard and Jamison head for the laundry, where they revive Donald after an apparent assault. Inside, they discover secret rooms, overpower Karl, and find Whistler's body, a shard of a distinctive watch crystal like the one Valerie possesses, microfilming equipment, and the ashes of the defence plans. Lanyard deduces that the plans have been transferred to King's watch.

Valerie King phones, and Lanyard pretends to be Karl to learn that she is at the hotel. Before they can reach her, Rembrandt shoots Valerie and takes the watch to Karl, collapsing another link in the chain of information.

Booth has an aircraft armed with machine guns ready for action. Lanyard pilots it and locates the speeding car carrying Karl and Rembrandt toward the submarine. He guns them down, ending their plot and securing a decisive victory for the Allied intelligence effort.
