Out of Scale

The short begins with a mighty steam locomotive roaring along a scale-model track in Donald Duck's backyard, with Donald at the controls. The engine and town are miniature, setting a playful, self-contained world. This opening establishes the layout and Donald's enthusiasm for his model railroad.

Donald stops the train in the model town of Canyonville to place the miniature trees he is carrying. He momentarily basks in the scene, but a real tree interrupts the scale. The clash between the real world and the model sets the stage for conflict.

The real tree strikes Donald as out of scale, and his frustration turns explosive. The tree is already occupied by Chip and Dale, who are bumped and displaced. This misalignment ignites the first stems of pursuit on the miniature stage.

In a display of surprising strength, Donald grabs the full-sized tree and carries it to a flatcar on the model train. He lifts the tree off the ground and onto the train, demonstrating dominance over the forest and his own layout. Chip and Dale are knocked from the scene as Donald asserts control.

Chip and Dale pursue the missing tree and manage to stop the train by using the brake wheel on the caboose. The tree proves too heavy for them to move, and the attempt ends with their discouragement. Donald responds with renewed aggression and continues to drive them away.

Donald chases Chip and Dale away with an oil can, sending them fleeing for safety. They duck into a network of miniature houses scattered across the layout. The pursuit reveals the scale-bound world is both playground and trap.

From a vantage point among the houses, Donald notices smoke rising from chimneys and realizes Chip and Dale fit perfectly into the miniature world. His mood shifts from anger to delight as he imagines them as ideal tenants. He even offers milk and tucks them in at bedtime.

The affection turns sour as Donald decides to have fun at their expense by subjecting them to extreme environmental conditions on the layout. He turns up the heat and applies rough handling, testing their endurance in their now-tabled world. The chipmunks respond by plotting their comeback.

Realizing they have been mistreated, Chip and Dale seize their moment by commandeering the model train that still holds their tree. They pull away from the layout with the objective of reclaiming what they see as theirs. Donald, enraged but determined, pursues them.

As the chase continues, the tree cannot fit through a tunnel. It flips over and lands re-planted along the railroad track, altering the layout's geography. The impact also creates a small tunnel-like opening through the trunk.

Seeing the new position, Chip and Dale place a 'Giant Redwood' sign on the tree and claim it is a scale model of a California giant redwood with a tunnel. Their explanation reconciles the apparent absurdity for Donald. He accepts the justification and continues the run with a sense of victory.

Satisfied with the story, Donald bids Chip and Dale farewell and rides his train through the tunnel they created. The chipmunks celebrate their clever victory as the scene closes. The miniature world returns to its peaceful status, with the chipmunks still in the house.
