A young girl named Janey, voiced by Rhyon Nicole Brown, often finds herself bullied by her older siblings, Lester and Julie. Seeking a reprieve, she ventures into the woods, where she encounters Brer Rabbit, a clever anthropomorphic rabbit, who is being pursued by the cunning Brer Fox, voiced by D.L. Hughley. In a flash of ingenuity, Brer Rabbit tricks Brer Fox into falling into a well, allowing him to escape unharmed. Shortly after, Janey meets Brer Turtle, voiced by Danny Glover, who proceeds to share some intriguing tales about Brer Rabbit’s adventures.
Brer Turtle recounts how all animals once lived as constellations in the starry sky, under the watchful gaze of Sister Moon, brought to life through the enchanting voice of Wanda Sykes. However, when Sister Moon falls ill, she entrusts Brer Rabbit with a crucial task: to relay a metaphorical message to a human called Mr. Man, informing him of her temporary absence. Though Brer Rabbit successfully delivers the message, he inadvertently miscommunicates, leading to Sister Moon's discontent and a quarrel that results in Brer Rabbit creating holes in her. This disagreement prompts Brer Rabbit to relocate to Earth, and his friends eagerly decide to follow suit upon learning of his exciting experiences there.
As Brer Rabbit adjusts to life on Earth, he faces the relentless threat of predators like Brer Fox and Brer Wolf, skillfully outsmarting them in a series of humorous escapades. In one instance, while attempting to harvest peanuts from Brer Fox’s territory, he gets ensnared in a trap and hangs helplessly from a tree. Observing the commotion, Brer Bear, voiced by Gary Anthony Williams, stumbles upon the scene, getting duped by Brer Rabbit. Brer Rabbit tricks him into hanging in his stead, claiming he earns "a dollar an hour" for guarding the peanut patch, leading to a comical switch.
The story unfolds further during the animals’ annual fishing trip under the night sky. When luck doesn’t favor Brer Rabbit, he collaborates with Brer Turtle to distract the other animals, fabricating a tale that Sister Moon is hiding in the pond, thus scaring away the fish for their benefit. Unfortunately, Brer Rabbit’s antics lead to unintended social repercussions; as recounted by Brer Turtle, the other animals end up snubbing him from an invitation to a party at Brer Fox’s house. In a moment of scheming revenge, Brer Rabbit disguises himself with mud, leaves, and sticks, positioning himself as a frightful monster to scare away the other animals and wreak havoc at the party. Although he feels initially triumphant, Brer Rabbit is soon enveloped by isolation.
Feeling sympathy for Brer Rabbit, Brer Turtle endeavors to forge an unlikely friendship between him and Brer Wolf, but his attempts are met with snarls as Brer Wolf prepares to devour him until Brer Rabbit comes to the rescue. In an admirable turn, Brer Rabbit begins to engage in selfless deeds for the other animals, slowly earning their acceptance, save for Brer Fox.
When Brer Fox reveals his intention to catch Brer Bear for his feast, Brer Rabbit and his friends manage to turn the situation against him, strategically orchestrating a trap that results in Brer Fox being confronted by a fierce Brer Lion. Following this victory, however, Brer Fox recovers and retaliates by breaking into Brer Rabbit’s home and capturing him.
Tied to a post and facing imminent roasting, Brer Rabbit cleverly persuades Brer Fox that rabbits who are eaten lead to unfortunate outcomes and suggests a visit to his “laughing place.” Leading Brer Fox deep into the woods to an old tree, he tricks him into dislodging a beehive upon his head, causing chaos and allowing Brer Rabbit to escape, albeit still tied.
In yet another twist, Brer Wolf stumbles upon the entrapped Brer Rabbit but is again outwitted as Brer Rabbit tricks him into believing that treasure lies inside a log. Once the gullible wolf enters, Brer Rabbit sends the log tumbling off a cliff into a pond, further embroiling the two in a web of his tricks.
In a demonstration of their rivalry, Brer Fox and Brer Wolf devise a plan to ensnare Brer Rabbit using tar. When Brer Rabbit unexpectedly falls into their trap, he cleverly employs reverse psychology, leading them to throw him into a nearby briar patch, which becomes the perfect escape route for him.
Back in the present moment, Brer Fox encounters Brer Turtle and Janey, inquiring about Brer Rabbit's whereabouts. Deceptively, Brer Turtle misdirects him, and shortly after, Brer Rabbit returns, impressing Janey with his cunningness. When she seeks to understand his tricks, Brer Rabbit shares his wisdom: “Just give them what they think they want.”
As Janey returns to her home for dinner, she takes this lesson to heart, playfully duping her brother Lester into believing their mom's tuna casserole is a magnificent feast, leading to comical disappointment for him. Meanwhile, Brer Rabbit and Brer Turtle enjoy a friendly race back to the woods, where Brer Rabbit once again finds himself caught in another trap.
Finally, the film concludes with a beautiful shot of Sister Moon watching over Brer Rabbit from the night sky, accompanied by a warm smile and a playful wink directed at the audience, ensuring that the charm of the tale lingers on.
