Donald insists that the oak where Chip and Dale live is “out of scale” for his backyard ride‑on train layout. While the chipmunks are away, he uproots the tree to fit his model, only for them to return and find it being moved. Undeterred, Donald points out that one of his miniature houses matches their size, turning the mishap into a perfectly sized home.

The short opens with a sweeping shot of a mighty steam locomotive thundering along a track, but it’s actually a meticulously crafted miniature. Donald Duck sits at the controls, guiding the tiny world as he pilots the train through a detailed backyard layout, sweeping past a quaint model town called Canyonville. After a brief stop, he steps off to plant the miniature trees he’s carrying. He bumps into a real tree, quickly sensing it’s out of scale and irks him. In a display of surprising strength, he lifts the full-sized tree and ferries it onto a flatcar on the model train, turning a simple annoyance into a bold display of power.
As Chip and Dale return to investigate their missing tree, they try to stop the train by grabbing the brake wheel on the caboose, but the tree’s weight proves too much for their efforts. Donald, unfazed, chases them away with an oil can, and the chipmunks dart to safety inside a miniature house elsewhere on the layout. They settle in, instantly making themselves at home in the cozy, scale-perfect dwelling.
Donald’s initial ire gives way to fascination as he notices the chipmunks’ presence. The sight of them, so perfectly scaled to the model world, brings a playful warmth to the scene. He begins to treat them almost like miniature guests, even serving as a milkman for them and tucking them in at bedtime, a surprising display of indulgence in this toy-sized universe.
Yet the mood shifts again when Donald decides to have some lighthearted fun at the chipmunks’ expense, subjecting them to exaggerated environmental conditions within the tiny world. Realizing they’re being toyed with, the chipmunks make a bold move to reclaim their tree. They hijack the model train still carrying the prized trunk and speed off with it, the chase echoing through the miniature streets.
The tree can’t fit through a tunnel, so it keels and lands re-planted along the railroad. The impact carves a tunnel through the trunk, a twist that leaves Donald momentarily frustrated, while the chipmunks quickly improvise a clever defense. They place a sign on the tree reading “Giant Redwood” and claim it’s a scale model of a California Giant Redwood complete with its own tunnel. Satisfied with the ruse, Donald caps the moment with a quiet nod and continues on his ride through the tunnel, the chipmunks celebrating their crafty victory at the layout’s edge.
