Our Time

On the first day of their senior year in 1955 Springfield, Abby Reed and Muffy Pratt trade stories from the summer and set up the year's emotional terrain. Abby reveals she nearly lost her virginity to Michael, while Muffy laments that she hasn't yet had an opportunity. The two friends establish the intimate stakes that will drive their choices this year.

At a mixer with St. Ambrose, students are randomly paired. Abby reconnects with Michael and makes plans to visit soon, while Muffy is paired with Buzzy Knight but is quickly crushed when he flirts with other girls and offers to switch partners. Malcolm, who harbors feelings for Muffy, is largely ignored. By night's end, Abby pledges a weekend visit to Michael in two weeks.

Abby schemes to visit Michael by pretending to go to her grandmother, and Muffy impersonates Abby's grandmother over the phone to secure a weekend pass. The ruse works, and Abby plans her trip while Muffy braces for the weekend ahead.

Abby and Michael check into a hotel for their weekend apart, each with their own room. After an awkward start, they share a moment of connection as Michael reassures Abby that his love will endure.

Back at school, Muffy receives a letter from Buzzy apologizing for his behavior. Abby advises caution, but Muffy answers with hope and invites him to a Christmas Eve party at Abby's family home.

At the Christmas Eve party, Buzzy flirts with another girl, leaving Muffy humiliated and heartbroken. Afterward, she lures Malcolm to the back of a car and they have sex; Malcolm initially resists but gives in, lamenting later that he was a virgin until now. The encounter contrasts sharply with Abby and Michael's relationship.

Back at school, Muffy suspects she might be pregnant and visits a doctor who confirms it. The doctor tells her to tell her parents, but Muffy refuses, and he refuses to refer her to other doctors.

With few options, Muffy travels to a nearby city with Abby, Michael, and Malcolm as Michael arranges for someone to perform the abortion. During the trip, Malcolm reveals he wants to marry Muffy, but she rejects the idea and remains focused on control over her life.

The doctor Frank performs the abortion; Muffy seems fine at first but soon begins hemorrhaging. She tries to keep the cause secret from the school nurse as her condition worsens.

Muffy's condition rapidly worsens and she is hospitalized. Abby, Malcolm, and Michael visit, only to learn that Muffy has died.

On the day of graduation, Abby lies on Muffy's bed and cries, mourning her friend's absence as she prepares to attend the ceremony. The weight of Muffy's death underscores the transitions of the year.

Abby dons her cap and joins the graduation procession, carrying the memory of Muffy with her as the school year ends and she steps toward the next chapter of her life.
