After World War II, petty‑bourgeois cashier Karl Weber watches from a distance as his son Ernst strives to help build a new socialist society. Uncomprehending of Ernst’s ideals, Karl confides in his other son Harry, who soon turns to illegal trade. Realizing the futility, Karl joins Ernst at the citizen‑owned factory, embracing the collective future.
