Operation Bikini

During World War II in the Pacific, a U.S. submarine commander is ordered to pause and escort an underwater demolition team led by Lt. Morgan Hayes. Hayes’ mission is to locate and destroy an American submarine that sank in a lagoon off Bikini Atoll before the Japanese can raise it and seize the advanced radar system aboard, a prize that could tilt the balance of power in the region.

The demolition crew consists of Seaman Joseph Malzone, Seaman William Sherman, and Seaman Ronald Davayo, with Davayo the only member fluent in Japanese. Malzone clings to a photo of his girl, affixing it to the torpedo above his bunk as a personal talisman. He also narrates his devotion through two musical dream sequences, softly underscoring his longing for The Girl Back Home.

Upon arriving at the atoll, the squad links up with a guerrilla band that guards the coast, including native interpreter Paul and the buxom Reiko Reiko. After a Japanese patrol takes Paul’s life, a romance blossoms around Reiko and Hayes, or perhaps Malzone, adding a human complication to the daring mission. Before anything can crystallize, a Japanese cutter advances up the river, sparking a skirmish in which Reiko is killed. The bosun’s mate Ed Fennelly is wounded in the same engagement, and Seaman William Sherman carries him back to Carey’s submarine while reporting a grim discovery: the lagoon that once hid the radar submarine is now crowded with Japanese vessels. Carey relays this urgent update to the nearest American aircraft carrier, setting the stage for a high-stakes plan.

With the fleet aware of the threat, the remaining demolition team uses the captured Japanese cutter to push directly into the lagoon. Malzone and Hayes descend to the sunken sub, intent on disabling it before the Japanese salvage fleet can salvage the radar tech. The action intensifies when the Japanese salvage boat opens fire on the cutter, forcing Davayo to ram the vessel in a suicidal move that buys precious moments for his teammates. After they plant their charges, Malzone and Hayes are guided back to Carey’s sub by Sherman’s steady lungs, as a swarm of American dive bombers appears on the horizon to obliterate the Japanese flotilla lurking beneath the lagoon’s surface.

In the aftermath, the mission’s success hinges on careful coordination, sacrifice, and the grit of a small unit of sailors who face impossible odds in the name of war-affected loyalties and human connections. The quiet intensity of their friendships—woven through danger, doubt, and devotion—echoes against the vast, perilous theater of the Pacific, where every decision could alter the fate of countless lives.
