Mara Cecova, the lead actress, has a heated argument with the director and crew just outside the theater. In a twist of fate, she is struck by a car, leading to her being unable to perform that night.

With Mara incapacitated, her understudy, Betty, is thrust into the lead role of Lady Macbeth. Although filled with dread, she quickly garners acclaim on stage, captivating the audience with her performance.

On the opening night of *Macbeth*, an enigmatic opera fanatic watches Betty from an empty box. Tensions rise when a stagehand confronts him, only to be brutally murdered by the fanatic in a shocking act of violence.

After a celebration in her dressing room with her boyfriend Stefan, Betty is terrorized when the unseen assailant breaks into their apartment. The scene turns horrific as Stefan is murdered in front of her, leaving Betty traumatized.

Haunted by childhood memories of her mother's murder, Betty chooses not to go to the authorities about Stefan's death. Instead, she confides in Marco, the director, expressing fear that the killer may be targeting her next.

Inspector Alan Santini arrives at the opera house to investigate Stefan's brutal murder. Meanwhile, Betty avoids him, seeking advice from her supportive agent Mira, who tries to protect her from the unfolding chaos.

During rehearsals, seamstress Giulia discovers that Betty's costume has been slashed. In her attempts to repair it, she finds a mysterious gold bracelet sewn into the fabric, which hints at deeper secrets.

As Giulia investigates the bracelet, the killer reappears, tying Betty up and brutally attacking Giulia. In a desperate struggle, Giulia uncovers the killer's identity but is fatally wounded in the process.

Betty returns to her apartment seeking refuge and encounters Inspector Santini, revealing the threats against her life. She is promised protection, but the arrival of a man claiming to be Inspector Soavie raises suspicion and confusion.

During the performance of *Macbeth*, chaos erupts as Marco unleashes aggressive ravens into the audience, which attack the murderer. The true identity of the killer is revealed to be Inspector Santini, shocking everyone.

In an intense showdown, Betty confronts Inspector Santini, who exposes his dark motivations tied to her family's past. As tensions build, Betty must use her ingenuity to escape the deadly trap Santini has set for her.

After fleeing to the Swiss Alps with Marco, Betty faces Santini one last time during a tense chase through the wilderness. In a climactic encounter, Marco sacrifices himself for Betty, proving her strength as she finally fights back and defeats the killer.

With Santini apprehended, Betty finds solace in the tranquility of nature. To symbolize her freedom from the trauma that has haunted her, she releases an ugly lizard, marking her triumph over the darkness.
