The film opens at the 1937 Academy Awards, Gale Sondergaard, Greta Scacchi, wins the first-ever Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Her acceptance speech, read by some as a bold anti-Fascist gesture, sparks controversy and she and her husband, Herbert Biberman Jeff Goldblum, are soon placed under contract at Warner Bros. The mounting anxiety of the era lands squarely on Biberman’s Jewish identity as much as on his political leanings, and a broader circle of Hollywood artists—Biberman, Sondergaard, and others from the left-leaning fringes—find themselves scrutinized as the climate grows colder.

On the home front, Sondergaard quietly nurtures a plan to revive both her career and a stubbornly hopeful ideal: directing a screenplay about a real labor struggle—the 1950-51 Empire Zinc strike in Bayard, New Mexico, written by Michael Wilson (Biberman’s brother). The project’s proposed lead, Esperanza Quintero, would be a forceful, empathetic portrayal of a community’s resilience, and Sondergaard believes the cast should reflect the miners and their families rather than the usual studio stars.

To turn that vision into reality, Biberman agrees to cast ethnic actors in major roles, pushing back against the industry’s fear of association with blacklist-era retribution. With no studio backing and real-world risk amplifying every decision, the production pivots toward community-based participation. Among the few Hollywood names who step onto the ground with the locals is Will Geer, represented onscreen by Larry Geer Larry Lamb in a rare departure from big-studio norms. The collaboration between seasoned actors and Grant County volunteers becomes a defining feature of the project, lending a raw immediacy that a conventional set would not have allowed.

Scenes featuring Revueltas are stitched into the final cut, smuggled back into the United States to preserve the integrity of the performances and the message. The finished work stands as a testament to endurance, artistic integrity, and a commitment to telling a story that might have otherwise remained untold.
