Inspector Danladi Waziri arrives in Akote, a remote village in Western Nigeria, to lead a meticulous inquiry into a grim wave of rapes and murders targeting young women. The British colonial authorities entrust him with gathering facts, connecting clues, and presenting his findings with the aim of restoring some sense of order in a town on edge.

On his first day, he is received by Sergeant Afonja, who cautions him about the town’s mood and introduces the uneasy pride surrounding a young man who has become a symbol of progress: Prince Aderopo, the village’s first university graduate and a figure admired by many. As Waziri begins to map the case, a chilling pattern emerges that convinces him a single serial killer is at work, someone who knows how to stalk the community’s nights and shadows.

That evening, the village bar becomes a stage for the intertwined lives of the powerful and the vulnerable. Prince Aderopo chats with his childhood friends Tawa and Agbekoya, while one of Aderopo’s guards deserts his post to spend time with a lover. The bar is also the place where Baba Ifa, the town’s chief priest, issues a foreboding warning to Waziri and Afonja: the killings will continue until the killer is satisfied. The next day brings tragedy as the guard’s lover is found dead, confirming that the violence is far from结束.

Waziri moves to act, ordering the arrest of Baba Ifa, though Afonja resists, and the pair’s tension leads to a leadership shake-up: Afonja is suspended and his deputy, Corporal Omolodun, steps in. Soon after, the body of an Igbo girl is discovered. Omolodun trails the killer through a bush path, but the hunter strikes first and kills him, shifting the investigation onto a new trail. The authorities detain a traveling Hausa man, claimed to be the killer by Okafor, the girl’s father, and his fellow tribesmen. The accused man protests his innocence, insisting the real killer was whistling a tune as he died.

With the evidence seemingly pointing toward a solution, Waziri informs his superiors that the murderer has been found and hints at closing the case. Yet on transfer day, Okafor disrupts the proceedings by hurling a machete at the detainee, striking a fatal blow. As the man dies, he reiterates that he did not kill the girl, leaving Waziri with a troubling doubt about the truth he is prepared to tell.

After a public celebration marking what appears to be a resolution, Waziri is assaulted by the killer, though his memory remains hazy at first. A night of drinking disrupts his clarity, but as he recovers, he begins to see the killer’s face more clearly. The following morning, Waziri studies the market’s body language to test his suspicions about Aderopo. A private visit to Tawa reveals a crucial thread: both Prince Aderopo and Agbekoya received the same scholarship from Reverend Dowling, the village priest, whose influence binds the town’s fortunes.

The investigation then uncovers a deeper, more disturbing connection: Dowling molested both Agbekoya and Aderopo, tying the violence to a history of abuse that reverberates through the present. As independence nears, the truth tightens its grip. At an independence celebration, Prince Aderopo invites Tawa to their renovated childhood hideout, a plan Waziri and Afonja attempt to foil but fail to stop. Only Agbekoya knows the hideout’s exact location, and he guides Waziri and Afonja to it.

There, the drama peaks as Aderopo moves to seize Tawa, a moment that would symbolize the six years of abuse under Dowling. Waziri and Afonja intervene just in time to save her, and Waziri then presents a full account of the ordeal to the British authorities. They urge him to withhold Aderopo’s identity for the sake of a controlled, peaceful move toward independence. The tension between justice, memory, and political necessity lingers, leaving a nuanced portrait of a community grappling with trauma, responsibility, and the fragile transitions that accompany a nation’s path to self-rule.
