Now Where Did the Seventh Company Get to?

During the Battle of France, the 7th Transmission Company takes a hit from an air raid near the Machecoul woods and seeks cover. Captain Dumont orders Chaudard, Pithiviers, and Tassin to scout the area to assess the danger and map a way out. The trio quickly becomes the forward scout for the unit under pressure.

Chaudard, Pithiviers and Tassin bury the radio cable beneath a sandy road to keep contact with their unit. They move across an open field and take position in a cemetery, hoping to stay unseen. A careless mistake later reveals the cable to incoming German infantry.

The Germans sever the radio cable and encircle the woods, ordering the 7th Company to surrender. The scouts try to contact their company but end up witnessing the capture and decide to flee rather than surrender themselves. They escape into the woods to preserve the mission.

The unit camps for the night in a wood. Pithiviers prefers to slow down and wait for the German infantry to move on. The next day, Chaudard and Tassin wake up and decide to search for Pithiviers, leaving the camp without weapons.

Chaudard and Tassin wake to find Pithiviers missing and set out to search. Tassin finds him and warns him, but Pithiviers persuades him to join a swim in the lake. Chaudard, distracted by a rabbit, falls into the water with his clothes on. Two German fighter planes appear overhead, forcing them to retreat from the water.

Two German planes appear while the men swim; they shoot down one plane, and Lieutenant Duvauchel makes an emergency landing, escaping before his plane explodes. The men are back on dry ground and prepared for the next phase of their mission.

Pithiviers sacrifices what remains of his shoe by destroying its sole to keep going. Tassin is sent on a patrol to fetch food and a new pair of shoes, but when he reaches a farm he finds only a dog and returns empty-handed.

Chaudard goes to the farm after nightfall when Tassin and Pithiviers stay in the woods. The farmer returns with her daughter-in-law and Lt Duvauchel; Duvauchel hides behind the door and later approaches Chaudard's group.

Upon returning to the camp, Duvauchel realizes Chaudard has been lying and decides to take command. He asserts himself clearly, challenging Chaudard's leadership and signaling a shift in control.

The next morning, the men leave the woods and capture a German armored tow truck after killing its two drivers. Rather than abandon the truck and the dead Germans, they recognize its value as disguise to reach the 7th Company.

On their way, they meet a National Gendarmerie patrol that appears to be a fifth column. The patrol injures the youngest member of their group, and Tassin kills them in retaliation. They then destroy a German tank using the tow truck's cannon.

The colonel misdirects them toward Paris, but they locate the 7th Company guarded and being taken to Germany. Under cover, they force the guards to run in front of the truck, allowing the 7th Company to escape.

Chaudard, Tassin and Pithiviers ride in the German uniformed truck, and they salute the German commander with a triumphant smile as they slip away. Their deception enables the 7th Company to break free from capture.

In June 1944, Chaudard, Tassin and Pithiviers are parachuted back into France aboard a plane piloted by Lieutenant Duvauchel. Their jump is premature, and Pithiviers slips again during the descent.
