In a small Rhode Island town, Vanessa Marks is an 8-year-old girl facing a life-threatening illness, and her world brightens when her father, Tom Marks, quietly schemes to bring the warmth of Christmas to her life long before December arrives. His plan begins with a snow globe gift that reveals a second, miniature world inside, and she is enchanted by the sight of snow—something she has never seen. Her mother, Beth Marks, frets that time is slipping away, while Tom’s worry grows that Vanessa may not live to see December.

As Tom confides in his neighbor, Jess Sanford, about pumpkins—and later about a Christmas tree—it becomes clear that he’s trying to speed up the seasons to give Vanessa one unforgettable celebration. Jess Sanford finds himself reconnecting with an old friend and, after healing a pain from the past, accepts an invitation to stand as best man at his old friend’s wedding. The plan develops into a familywide gesture: a truckload of pumpkins appears on the Marks’ porch, and Vanessa decides she wants a Halloween party. The idea blooms into something larger as the entire community is drawn into the celebration.

Claire Sanford, Tom’s sister-in-law, makes a warm invitation to join the festivities, while Jess and his wife bring food and decorations. The town’s waitress, Tammy, becomes a conduit for stories and plans, bringing the town’s children along to share in the festivities. When Tammy arrives with other kids, the home fills with laughter, costumes, and a sense that life can be larger than illness.

Vanessa, with her younger brother Gordon Marks and surrounded by new friends, experiences a sense of belonging she had not felt before. The series of early holiday celebrations—Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas—grow into a shared tradition as more neighbors lend their support, showing that love and community can be as healing as medicine.

As the house glows with lights and the driveway fills with neighbors, the sequence culminates in a scene of joy when the town’s generosity is visible in every corner. A later moment of snowfall outside echoes the snow globe’s promise, reinforcing the idea that the holiday magic was real for Vanessa. Far from being an escape from reality, these moments become a lasting memory of resilience and affection.

Tammy later writes a children’s book about Vanessa’s life, illustrated with the pictures Vanessa made during her illness. Fifteen years later, a grown Vanessa explains that she survived, healthy and hopeful, and returns with her family to the tree lot to select the town’s Christmas tree, where she is reunited with Jess Sanford and the rest of the community.
