What Happens in Nona: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Nona (2020) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Nona, Nadya Arina, tunes in to her favorite television show, E.W.W. Smashdown Wrestling, a ritual she shared with her late husband. One day, a knock on the door reveals that her granddaughter Renee has been dropped off by her daughter. She tries to keep watching, but Renee keeps stepping into the frame, making Nona restless and frustrated.

To keep Renee occupied, Nona tries distraction with crayons, Legos, and her dog, but Renee continually finds ways to get in the way of watching television. Eventually, Renee spots the show and attempts to imitate what she sees by jumping from the stairs. Nona rushes to catch her and accidentally knocks over the television, breaking it. With the loss of the connection to her cherished routine, Nona breaks down in tears, the memory of sharing those moments with her husband washing over her.

Seeing how sad she is, Renee emulates a wrestler for her and they slip into a playful fantasy sequence where the two of them wrestle each other. The moment lightens the mood, and they end up laughing together, their shared imagination offering a warm, if fleeting, comfort.

In the post-credits scene, Nona is on the couch with a sleeping dog while Renee lies atop her as Kitty Kitty Dance Party plays on the TV. Nona reaches for the remote, but it slips from her grasp and falls to the floor, leaving her momentarily frustrated yet still nestled in a quiet, affectionate moment with Renee.
