The Journey of Jared Price (2000) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of The Journey of Jared Price (2000), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened, and what it all means.

Nineteen-year-old Jared Jarrad Webster arrives in Los Angeles from a small town in Georgia, hoping for a different life. In a crowded youth hostel, he rents a bunk-bed room that already houses a male prostitute who sometimes uses the space to meet clients. Jared isn’t thrilled by the arrangement, but it is all he can afford. He soon lands a job as a sitter and caregiver to the blind Mrs. Haines Rocki Craigg, hired by her son Steve Tyler Matthew, a movie executive who wants someone to spend time with his mother so he won’t have to.

At the hostel, Jared meets Robert Josh Jacobson, an openly gay teen who soon shows his attraction to Jared. Robert is very comfortable with his sexuality, which leaves Jared uncertain about his own orientation. The story twists when Matthew asks Jared to move in with his mother so that he can also look after her at night, a plan that makes sense given the hostel’s noisy living situation.

Jared agrees to move into Mrs. Haines' home, and it isn’t long before power dynamics begin to surface. Soon after Jared moves in, Matthew gets him drunk and they have sex. The encounter complicates their relationship, raising questions about consent, boundaries, and what it costs to find shelter and care in a city that promises opportunity but often tests trust.

Complications mount as Matthew withholds a telephone message from Robert, and fails to mention Bryan Shyne Andrew, his lover at home, to Jared. This deception places Jared in a difficult position: should he stay and risk exploitation, or leave and potentially lose his job and a place to live?

Across these events, the film explores how young people navigate desire, loyalty, and survival when money and housing intersect with intimate relationships. It traces Jared’s slow, uncertain path toward autonomy in a city that tests his limits and forces hard choices about what kind of life he wants to build.

Q1

Why does Jared accept the caregiver job with Mrs. Haines?

A.

Jared accepts the job because he arrives in Los Angeles with little money and no connections. The position provides him with shelter, a steady income, and a legitimate reason to stay in the city. Matthew, the movie executive who hires him, frames the job as helping his blind mother, but the arrangement also gives Matthew someone to blame if he neglects his parental duties.

Jared's desperate financial situation at the youth hostel makes him vulnerable to opportunities that come with strings attached.

Why does Matthew hide the phone message from Robert?

A.

Matthew deliberately withholds a phone message from Robert, Jared's hostel roommate who has shown romantic interest in him. By intercepting the communication, Matthew prevents Robert from reaching Jared and keeps him isolated. Q4

Why doesn't Matthew tell Jared about Andrew?

A.

Matthew never mentions Andrew, his longtime lover back home, throughout his entire interaction with Jared. This omission keeps Jared ignorant of Matthew's true life and intentions. Q6

Why does Jared agree to move into Mrs. Haines' home?

A.

Jared agrees because the youth hostel is noisy and unstable, with one roommate being a male prostitute who sometimes brings clients to their shared room. Matthew offers a solution, move in to care for Mrs. Haines at night, for a more stable living situation. Jared sees this as an escape from precarious conditions, though it ultimately leads to new vulnerabilities.

The hostel atmosphere establishes the desperate circumstances that make Jared willing to accept Matthew's offer despite barely knowing him.

Q7

Why does Matthew hire Jared to care for his mother?

A.

Matthew hires Jared primarily to avoid the responsibility of spending time with his blind mother himself. As a busy movie executive, he wants someone else to fulfill his filial duty so he can maintain his career and social life. The arrangement also gives him control over a young, vulnerable person who depends on him for housing and employment.

Matthew's willingness to outsource his mother's care reveals his priorities and hints at his pattern of using people for convenience.

Q8

What choice does Jared face at the end of the story?

A.

Jared must decide whether to stay in the complicated arrangement with Matthew or leave and risk losing his job and housing. The situation has become emotionally taxing, Matthew's deception, the sexual encounter, and the secret-keeping have created a toxic dynamic. Yet leaving means returning to the instability of the hostel or worse. The story sets up this moral dilemma as a defining moment for Jared's autonomy.

The accumulation of secrets and the power imbalance between Jared and Matthew builds toward a breaking point where Jared must choose self-respect over security.

Q9

How does the film address exploitation of young gay men?

A.

The film explores how Jared's status as a young, broke, and sexually confused newcomer to Los Angeles makes him vulnerable to exploitation. Matthew takes advantage of this power imbalance through his control over Jared's housing and employment. The narrative shows how desperation for stability can trap people in manipulative relationships, particularly when they have few other options.

Matthew's initial helpfulness masks a predatory pattern that becomes clearer as the story progresses.

Q10

What is the significance of Jared's hostel roommate being a male prostitute?

A.

The detail establishes the harsh economic reality Jared faces in Los Angeles. Sharing a room with a prostitute who sometimes meets clients illustrates the desperation and instability of homeless or near-homeless youth. It also contrasts with the false sense of stability Matthew offers, better than a hostel, but still exploitative.

This early scene sets the economic stakes that make Jared vulnerable to Matthew's offers.
