Scrat discovers a buried time machine beneath an ice-encased human and accidentally activates it. The device announces the date May 26, 20,000 B.C. and zaps Scrat’s acorn in a flash. He stares in disbelief as the machine whirs to life, setting off a wild journey through time.

The time machine drops Scrat into the Middle Ages where he spots Excalibur wedged in stone. He pulls the sword free and uses it to move a rock that traps his acorn, provoking a tense moment with the era’s inhabitants. The quest to recover his acorn is abruptly intensified by the danger around him.

Scrat narrowly survives a volley of arrows as archers close in on him. He wields Excalibur to block the strikes and frees his acorn, though his tail gets snagged and dragged along. In the chaos, he triggers a cannon and blasts away toward another destination.

The time machine teleports Scrat to the Coliseum in Ancient Rome, where a passing chariot snags his tail and hurls him into the spectacle. He fights to free himself while the crowd roars and a distant growl hints at danger beyond the arena. He fires the machine in a panic, hoping to escape to safety.

The machine hurls Scrat onto a frozen North Atlantic field where he thinks he’s home, only for the RMS Titanic to materialize and threaten him as it sinks. He’s pressed into the iceberg's path as chaos unfolds around the ship. The machine zaps Scrat and the acorn mid-fall, sending them toward another time.

The splash of history lands Scrat in the world of the first Ice Age film, where he encounters his past self and a tense fight over the acorn ensues. The time machine is dragged into the fray and ends up zapping the acorn away again, much to both Scrats’ distress. Shortly after, the present Scrat is knocked out of the fight when past Scrat kicks the machine.

Scrat is swept through a sequence of dangerous moments, beginning with a perilous proximity to a Saturn V rocket during the Space Race. The machine jolts him from era to era as he struggles to recover his acorn and stay alive.

Back in modern times, Scrat mistakes a diamond for his acorn and triggers alarms in a dimly lit jewelry store. His missteps continue as he slips into a girl’s locker room and gets brushed by a roller brush, adding chaos to his already precarious situation. The continuous time hopping keeps him scrambling for his treasure.

Scrat whizzes through a sequence of dangerous historical moments—facing a guillotine during the French Revolution, witnessing Benjamin Franklin’s kite experiment, dodging a wrecking ball, and more. The run of peril continues with depictions of the Hiroshima event, a steam locomotive in the Wild West, and a comic brush with Michelangelo’s David. Each stop pushes him closer to disaster or discovery.

Timepieces morph into a strange dimension where clocks slice Scrat into clones. He grabs the acorn just before a wormhole sweeps him and the time machine away. The sequence intensifies the sense that time itself is working against him.

Scrat awakens before a colossal oak tree in a distant future where acorns—indeed, oak trees—are effectively extinct. He is overjoyed by the abundance of acorns, but his indecision leads him to discard his own, which lands on the machine and nearly triggers another firing. A commemorative plaque reading 'Here Stood The Last Oak Tree' reveals the grim truth of the world he inhabits.

The time machine fires one last time and sends the acorn sailing away from Scrat just as the machine collapses. Scrat is left stranded in a future where acorns are gone, crying out in frustration. The forever-lost acorn lingers behind the credits, sealing Scrat’s fate for this journey.
