The story spans numerous eras across history: a prehistoric moment around 20,000 B.C., classical antiquity in Rome, the late 18th- to early 20th-century events like the French Revolution and the Titanic era, the mid‑20th century Space Race, and a distant future where oak trees are extinct. The constant catalyst is a time machine that zaps Scrat into these different moments, creating chaotic but humorous cross-temporal episodes. The time jumps are used for gags and visual spectacle as Scrat chases his acorn through time.

Scrat's adventures jump across multiple settings: from a medieval Middle Ages landscape where Excalibur appears, to Ancient Rome's Coliseum, and into the icy North Atlantic during the Titanic sinking. The action also briefly lands in contemporary settings like a modern jewelry store and a girl's locker room, and touches dramatic historical scenes such as the French Revolution and Hiroshima. The narrative ends in a distant future beside a monumental oak tree, in a world where acorns become a legend.
