Velayudhan is an orphan raised in Mullankolli by the feudal landlord Valiya Nambiar. He grows into a kind-hearted local figure who enforces his own rules, earning the villagers' wary respect. He remains closely connected to Kelappan, who cared for him as a child.

From an early age he marks his authority with a simple act: planting a stick to signify control. The gesture becomes a symbol the villagers recognize and fear, signaling a reordering of power in Mullankolli. His presence alone unsettles troublemakers who cross his path.

During the village's temple festival, Kurup hires goons from outside to challenge Velayudhan. He defeats them in a brutal display of power, reinforcing his rule in public. The clash ends with his momentary arrest by the police, illustrating the brittle balance between authority and law.

An elderly constable helps prove Velayudhan's innocence to the SI, leading to his release. The villagers breathe a sigh of relief as the protector is vindicated. The episode strengthens his status as someone who can be wrongfully targeted yet remains essential to the community.

With the onset of the monsoon floods, Velayudhan, Kelappan, and Ahmed attempt to haul logs floating down the river. Hamsa, hired by Gopi, cuts the rope keeping a log in place, nearly causing disaster. Velayudhan recovers the log anyway, defeats Hamsa, and uses the moment to warn Gopi and Kurup.

Rumors spread by Gopi via Kurup allege illicit ties between Velayudhan and Kelappan's daughters, threatening Leela's reputation. Kelappan publicly expels Velayudhan from his house, and the marriage plan to Leela collapses as tempers flare. The town splits over the issue of Leela's honor.

Valiya Nambiar steps in and suggests marrying Leela to protect her reputation, given Velayudhan's stature. Leela remains opposed to the match, and the idea strains relations within the community. Nambiar's involvement marks a turning point in the village's handling of tragedy and propriety.

That night, Velayudhan shares his painful childhood and his love for Janaki with Ahmed, who offers shelter. The next morning, Ahmed finds Velayudhan battered by village goons in his sleep, a stark sign of growing mob pressure. The incident deepens the villagers' uneasy sympathy for him.

Ahmed informs Valiya Nambiar of the assault, leaving the elder feeling guilty for backing restraint. Some villagers begin to sympathize with Velayudhan for bearing the brunt of the town's animosity. The loss of his influence is felt as goons run wild in his absence.

Valiya Nambiar dies suddenly of a heart attack, shocking the village and intensifying the struggle against Gopi's scheme. His death leaves Velayudhan vulnerable but fueled by a personal motive to stand up for what is right. The sense of leadership in Mullankolli shifts dramatically.

In the aftermath, Hamsa again provokes a fight, and Velayudhan plants his walking stick to silence him. The village begins to rally behind him, signaling a return to power and the protection of Leela's dignity. The tension with Gopi escalates toward a reckoning.

In a long, brutal confrontation by the river, Velayudhan drowns Gopi, avenging Valiya Nambiar and Janaki. As the police arrive, he hides his tears and accepts the farewell from the village. The crowd gathers to honor him as the defender who chose the people over himself.
