Nandha

The film opens with a woman and her two children, Nandhaa Suriya and Chitra Sheela Kaur, arriving in Rameswaram, seeking a new start after a family tragedy that has left them reeling. Nandhaa, the elder child, is already marked by trauma: he is sent to a borstal for the murder of his father, a crime he believes stemmed from witnessing his father’s illicit affair with a prostitute and the abuse his mother endured when she discovered it. He returns home to his mother, Rajashree who is deaf-mute, and Chitra, both still in shock from the upheaval that reshaped their lives.

Determined to turn the page, Nandhaa tries to pursue a college education, but his criminal record creates a barrier to admission. His path changes when he encounters Periyavar Rajkiran, a wealthy and strict disciplinarian who runs an arts and science college with an iron hand. Periyavar’s ancestry traces back to the Ramanathapuram kings who aligned with the British; although most of their ceremonial power was stripped away after independence, a considerable fortune still remains with him. He presents himself as a guardian of the people, offering justice when the law and police seem unable or unwilling to help. It’s a role that draws him to Nandhaa, and the two form a bond that feels like mentorship and family.

In the midst of this, Kalyani Laila, a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee from Jaffna, enters Nandhaa’s life and the two quickly fall in love, bringing a glimmer of hope to a young man wrestling with his past. At the same time, Durai Saravanan, Periyavar’s son-in-law, pushes for Periyavar to back an antisocial element, though Periyavar stoutly refuses. One of Periyavar’s loyalists, however, betrays him and agrees to aid Durai in his schemes, setting a dangerous conflict in motion.

As Periyavar falls ill and is hospitalised, Nandhaa remains by his side, drawn to the mentor who gave him a second chance. The tension escalates when Durai, fearing exposure, harms Periyavar in the hospital by pulling the oxygen tube, and wrongly blames Nandhaa for his murder. Faced with a new, seemingly inescapable trap, Nandhaa must confront a courtroom battle that threatens to imprison him once more. Yet the trial collapses for lack of evidence, and Nandhaa is eventually acquitted, free from the immediate charges.

Returning home after the verdict, Nandhaa finds a fragile peace that is short-lived. His mother’s paranoia about his potential violence intensifies, and she plots to poison him from love and fear, cooking a meal that she herself intends to be his last. He discovers the danger but continues to eat, accepting the bitter irony that his nourishment comes from the hands of the only parent who ever protected him. In a devastating turn, both he and his mother die in each other’s arms, leaving behind a shaken circle of friends who had believed in his chance for redemption.

When Lodukku Pandi [Karunas], along with Chitra and Kalyani, arrives at the scene, they are confronted with the stark reality of a life cut short by tragedy, and they come to realize that the past’s wounds have finally closed in on the present. The story closes on a somber note, reflecting on themes of forgiveness, fate, and the fragile line between justice and revenge, as the lives of those who touched Nandhaa’s world are left to reckon with the cost of a youthful past that could never be erased.
