Mosquito Squadron

In early summer 1944, the Royal Air Force starts attacking German V-1 flying bomb installations. The campaign targets the launch sites to cripple the V-1 threat. This offensive forms the backdrop for the subsequent operations against the château.

During a low-level bombing raid on a V-1 launching site, Scotty Scott's Mosquito is shot down. Scott and his navigator are presumed killed, marking a heavy loss for the squadron. The raid suffers a blow as the crew is lost.

Following the raid, Quint Munroe comforts Beth, Scott's wife, and a romance rekindles from years earlier. The renewed relationship adds a personal dimension to the ongoing operations. Their bond deepens amid the pressures of the war.

Munroe undertakes a photographic reconnaissance mission over Château de Charlon in Northern France and nearly loses his life. The perilous flight underscores the dangers faced by those gathering intelligence. The mission sets the stage for a bold assault on the château.

Under orders from Air Commodore Hufford, Munroe is tasked to lead an attack on the château using Barnes Wallis-type Highball bombs. The aim is to breach the outer wall and reach the prisoners inside. The plan hinges on precise timing and daring execution.

Allied prisoners, including Scott and other airmen, are held as human shields to deter the raid. A Luftwaffe bombing and strafing assault on the airfield kills several RAF personnel. The grim tactic foreshadows the stakes of the mission.

Father Belaguere, a priest and Maquis agent, is killed by Oberleutnant Schack for refusing to order the airmen back. The prisoners push Schack outside and take shelter in the chapel. The chapel becomes a focal point for the breakout plan.

Munroe and Bannister drop their first two Highball bombs but miss the targeted walls. Wingman Clark is shot down by a Bf 109 as the raid unfolds. The mission tightens as the aircrews press their remaining weapons.

Bannister is shot down by flak and crashes into the tunnel, but his Highball detonates, destroying the underground factory. The destruction of the facility represents a major blow to the enemy’s war effort. The raid pushes toward its climactic moments.

Munroe detonates a charge that blows open the prison wall, allowing most of the airmen to escape. Resistance fighters assist in the breakout, enabling a broad evacuation. The escape alters the balance of the mission.

Senior RAF officer Neale is killed by German machine-pistol fire during the breakout. Despite the loss, the escape continues with the help of the resistance. The breakout solidifies the airmen's chances of survival.

The survivors are rescued by submarine and repatriated to the RAF base the next day. Munroe is greeted with congratulations and is soon reunited with Beth and her brother Shelton. Shelton reveals that Scott survived, but keeps the truth from Beth for now.
