In 1965 New Penzance, we meet twelve-year-old Sam Shakusky, an orphan attending the Khaki Scout summer camp. Despite the picturesque island setting, Sam grapples with feelings of loneliness and the complexities of being an outsider.

Suzy Bishop lives on the island in a charming house called Summer's End with her attorney parents and three younger brothers. Her life is filled with the expectations of her parents, and she feels out of place as she searches for a connection beyond her home life.

The previous summer, Sam and Suzy shared a significant moment at a local church performance of Noye's Fludde. This encounter sparks a friendship that grows through letters, culminating in their plan to reunite and escape together.

Excited about their upcoming adventure, Sam gathers essential camping supplies such as a canoe and provisions, while Suzy collects books, her cat, and a record player. Their contrasting items reflect their personalities and shared dreams of escapism.

With their supplies in hand, Sam and Suzy set off on their expedition to a secluded cove they name Moonrise Kingdom. This marks the beginning of their thrilling adventure filled with love and exploration away from the judgmental eyes of society.

When Suzy's absence is discovered, her parents begin to investigate her whereabouts. Laura, Suzy's mother, uncovers the letters exchanged between Suzy and Sam, propelling the family's frantic search to find the young couple.

Captain Sharp joins the search efforts, coordinating with Scout Master Ward to locate Sam and Suzy. The collaboration reveals the complexities of adult relationships as Sharp secretly harbors feelings for Suzy's mother, Laura.

As they hide from their pursuers, Sam and Suzy find joy dancing at the beach, showcasing their carefree spirits. Their first kiss solidifies their bond, illustrating the innocence and depth of young love amidst chaos.
