The film traces the enduring friendship between two youngsters, Chintu and Anu, and follows how their simple joys—chasing butterflies, running through rain, and singing to the beauty of nature—bind them together despite their starkly different worlds. Chintu, coming from a poor family, faces confrontation from Anu’s father when he plays with her, yet their bond remains unshaken. A pivotal moment occurs when Chintu secretly accompanies a feverish Anu to a shrine; there, they pledge to return every year on Anu’s birthday, preserving a secret vow that will shape their futures.

As time passes, a cruel twist of fate pushes them apart. Before parting, Anu gives Chintu’s nickname Sintu a musical watch and urges him to study hard. Sintu keeps the watch close, but tragedy strikes when Sintu’s mother dies, and he is raised by another family, growing up as their son, now named Benu. Years later, Anu travels abroad for further studies and eventually returns, carrying with her the memory of their childhood pact. She revisits the shrine on her birthday, hoping to reconnect, but Chintu arrives late, adding a layer of longing to their shared story.

Back home, Anu channels their memories into words. She writes a heartfelt story about their childhood and publishes it in a weekly magazine, concealing the author’s identity by adopting the name Renu. The serialized piece captures readers’ imaginations, triggering a flood of letters, yet none reach her old friend Sintu, leaving Anu with questions and a stubborn hope. In the midst of this, Arun—a friend of Anu—offers a candid reminder that in this internet age, not every reader engages with a weekly magazine, but Anu remains undeterred, convinced that even a small audience can carry a powerful message.

Soon, the layers of identity and memory begin to intersect. On a TV show, Anu overhears Benu discussing their shared past, realizing that her childhood friend might be the person she has been seeking all along. Blending caution with curiosity, she steps closer to Benu’s world, visiting his home and forming a tentative friendship with his family, all while keeping her own identity hidden. Around them, a father’s plans and pressures intensify: Anu’s father arranges a marriage between Anu and the son of a powerful MP, a prospect that forces Anu to confront the pull between duty and desire.

Meanwhile, Rekha, Benu’s younger sister, becomes a piece in a larger scheme. Her engagement hinges on the matchmaking moves of Anu’s father, who uses the situation to push Benu toward Rekha’s hand in marriage.
