Molly and Me

In 1937 London, Molly Barry, a struggling vaudeville actress, decides to seek a respectable position as a housekeeper for the upper-class gentleman John Graham. She informs her friends Lily and Julia about the plan and persuades Kitty Goode to supply a fake reference. The move sets the plan in motion and introduces the scheme of using theatre connections to secure the job.

Peabody interviews Molly for the housekeeper post, wary of hiring another former actor. When Kitty arrives, Peabody recognises her as Kitty Goode, but he is secretly Harry Phillips, a former actor who quit drinking to reform. He doesn't want another entertainer in the house, setting up a tense dynamic that Molly must navigate.

To seal the deal, Molly persuades Peabody to join a pub party. The outing triggers his relapse, and he returns to the Graham residence half-unconscious. Molly uses the situation to secure his compliance and solidify her position in the household.

The half-unconscious Peabody is brought back to the Graham house, where Molly occupies the housekeeper's room. In the morning, she informs Mr. Graham that Peabody has “hired” her, effectively securing the job and forcing the staff to go along with the ruse.

Graham's old friend Jamie McDougall asks him to stand again for Parliament. Graham is reluctant, citing a past scandal, and shows him an old clipping which McDougall burns. He insists the incident will be forgotten.

Graham travels to Suffolk to meet a potential ally for his election bid, while Molly uncovers that the domestic staff are stealing from the household. She confronts them, sacks them, and begins running the house herself. The theft is uncovered while Graham is away.

From a fragment of the clipping Molly learns the truth about Graham's ex-wife. The ex-wife left abroad because of the scandal. The discovery deepens Molly's understanding of the Grahams' past.

Graham's teenage son Jimmy returns home from prep school with a fever. Molly cares for him and he confides his fear that his father dislikes him. He also reveals that he believes his mother died, adding emotional weight to the family dynamics.

Peabody sends Molly a telegram to prepare a formal dinner for Sir Arthur Burroughs, a powerful newspaper publisher. Lacking professional help on short notice, Molly hires her theatre friends to fill the gaps. The dinner turns into a success and Sir Arthur is impressed.

Graham congratulates the staff in the kitchen but overhears Jimmy mimicking his pompous manner. He sacks the staff, including Peabody, for being former entertainers. Molly scolds him for poor fathering, and by the next morning Graham reconsiders and rehired the staff.

The former Mrs. Graham resurfaces to demand £1000 from her ex-husband. Molly tells her husband he is asleep but promises to inform him of the demand. She uses her network to fool Mrs. Graham into thinking she was involved in a shooting death, forcing the extortionist to flee the country.

Graham and Jimmy return home after a theater performance. Graham jokes that he's been spoiled by Mrs. Barry’s late-night snacks and asks for another one in the kitchen. They sit together and sing a lighthearted song, signaling reconciliation.
