Kayla Tanaka [Nichole Sakura], 16, is half-Japanese, half-white, and fully American. She and her sister Amberlyn Tanaka [Courtney Mun], 14, live with their parents, Ken Tanaka [Chris Tashima], Japanese American, and Angie Tanaka [Jessica Tuck], white, in Jefferson Park, a low-income corner of Los Angeles that sits surprisingly close to Beverly Hills yet feels a world apart in daily life. When her parents announce their divorce, Ken moves in with his mother, Reiko Tanaka [Takayo Fischer], Kayla’s Baachan, and the girls remain with Angie, setting the stage for a family fracture that pushes Kayla toward turbulence and risk.

Kayla’s grades slip as she becomes increasingly distracted, and she finds herself navigating a harsh new reality. She meets Treyshawn Doty [Delon de Metz], a 19-year-old drug dealer who offers a measure of understanding about the humiliations tied to her mother’s addiction and about the growing tensions at home. He showers her with gifts and the promise of love, becoming a fragile lifeline as Angie’s temper and expectations tighten. When Angie kicks her out, Kayla moves in with Treyshawn, stepping deeper into a world that feels both thrilling and dangerous.

The turning point comes when Kayla discovers her mother unconscious in the bed of a neighborhood dealer, Dionte [Marc Anthony Samuel]. This moment destabilizes the fragile scaffolding of her life: she abandons her drawing and drops out of school; Amberlyn acts out with boys and drugs; Ken sinks into a hollow, silent alcoholism. Kayla seeks escape in the fast lane with Treyshawn, a choice that works for a time but finally leads to their arrest. Treyshawn doesn’t hesitate to betray her, turning her in to save himself and leaving Kayla to face the consequences on her own.

Reiko visits Kayla in juvie and is visibly ashamed, insisting that “Japanese people don’t go to prison.” Kayla counters with quiet defiance: “Baachan, that’s not true.” Reiko’s truth-telling is softened by love but remains stern: “Yes, it is.” Kayla pushes back, acknowledging the hard truth that has led her here. Inspired by her grandmother’s words, Kayla begins to draw again during art time in juvie, a small act that marks the first real step toward reclaiming herself. When she is released, she carries a renewed sense of gratitude for the chance to start over and a more tempered understanding of the choices that shape a life. The story traces her wake-up call from a cycle of hurt and distraction to a cautious resolve, showing how resilience, art, and a family’s hard-won wisdom can spark a path toward redemption.
